Over the years taxes and costs have gone up and the service we receive has now gone down.

2 things that spring to mind are the Royal Mail, we used to get a postal deliver around 7.30am and the 2nd post around about 11am now we just get 1 delivery around about lunch time.

Bin collections - we get less collections (I see the need to recycle) but they used to collect the bins about 7.00am now the council in all their wisdom now collect on a Friday about 5.00pm just as the capital city is in rush hour now made worse by the bin lorries clogging up the roads.

Share your costs up service down stories.

You could trade her in, unfortunately were stuck with bin collection times.

Many sweets and chocolate bars have reduced considerably in size and/or have "new and improved" recipes that are anything but.

Well at least they're showing the "Good Old Days" on TV again.

It's a bit weird, thinking how things were good in the old days, but you realise how crap TV variety shows was back then, and in fact the 70's were, on balance (beyond some pretty good rock albums) a pretty crap time to live.

You do realise that bin collection is an ongoing thing, smeared out over a full week across your city/village right? Its not like the council has a humongous fleet of garbage trucks/men sitting idle the whole week only to descend onto the the city on friday afternoon?

The post thing is obvious, less mail == less economies of scale == less service. As a counterpoint, where you used to get 100% of your communications from the mailman, 90% is by e-mail these days, reducing message delivery times/latency drastically.

Indeed!

2002 Yorkie bars were 70 grams, now they're 44 grams.
Almost half the size and no doubt more expensive!

I love my Yorkies

Yeah but seeing 'Please allow up to 28 days delivery' was annoying (once you cut out and filled in the little slip of paper that was the order form).

I get annoyed having to wait more than 1 day now.

At least stuff used to get delivered rather than the courier sticking a note through the door and then having drive 20 miles each way to collect the bloody parcel I paid to have delivered.

Obviously they collect different days in different areas 5 days a week but it used to be all done before 8am now its probably 3-8pm right over kids leaving school and commuter rush hour.

I can remember when a pint of bitter was 1s. 10d. ( 9p ) and there were seven pubs and an off-licence in the village.

Now it's over £3 a pint and there are only two pubs left.
And one of those no longer serves pickled eggs. frown

If it will not fit though the letter box I get stuff delivered to an Amazon locker in my corner shop. That way I don't have to wait until the weekend to go to the Post Office to pick it up.

I remember Whitbread being 98 pence a pint when I 1st starting drinking, used to know how many pints you'd had by how many 2p's you had in your pocket in the morning!
Obviously didn't work if you were in rounds.

I remember £10 being enough to do numerous local pubs, bus into town, do the wine bars, then into the local nightclub, spend the night getting drunk, pie and peas outside and share a taxi home.

I'm having a rare night out tonight without the wife. I'm guessing £60 or so. and I won't be drinking like the teenage fish I once was. God knows where you'd even get pie and peas at 3 am in a city centre these days too.

My local pub is a Sam Smiths establishment, so it is still possible to go out with a tenner and have a few pints as the real ale is sub £2 a pint, and they do something called mild which is sub £1.50 a pint.

80's ! didn't smoke so that must have saved a fair bit. probably mine swept for drinks too- as you do as a teenager.

I remember a place in Leeds where it was £10 in- but lager, bitter or cider was 20p a pint all night. happy days. probably a bit waterery from memory !

Snakebite.
I thought I would relive the 1980s a couple of months back and ordered a Pernod and black. There was a puzzled look on the barman's face as he took the bottle right from the back (very dusty it was a well!) then asked the head barman what quantity to add and the price.

So I tried this drink that I used to love like hell and it was disgusting! Tasted the cross between syrup and cough medicine.
