Golf V5 immobiliser issue
Discussion
Hi all,
Quick reach-out for help, if I may.
A friend of mine has just bought a ‘03’ Golf V5.
After a couple of days of ownership the alarm started going off, for what seemed like no apparent reason. As it was 3am he decided to disconnect the battery to stop it from going off again.
When he reconnected the battery later that morning the car wouldn’t start:
When the key is inserted into the barrel there is a distinct ticking/clicking noise coming from the dashboard
The digital parts of the dash flash in line with the ticking noise.
After a few seconds the dash displays ‘IMMOBIL ACTIVATED’
All interior lights are flashing.
He’s tried ringing auto-electricians, currently without much joy (messages left but no reply – others need the car at their garage, that kind of thing.)
Anyone had experience with this kind of issue? Any help much appreciated.
One other thing – the car came with 2 keys, the plastic cover of one being quite worn. Part of this was replaced for new plastic cover (only half I believe – the half that did not have the immobiliser chip attached to it. Not sure if this is relevant, but added for completeness.
Both keys cause the above issue.
Many thanks
Scott

Hi Cupramax,
Many thanks for your reply, and apologies for the delay responding.
An auto-electrician has been out to the car this morning and discovered the fault. It is a flat battery caused by a faulty fan relay; water ingress in the relay had caused it to run the fan continuously, until the battery went flat.
Hopefully, a fully charged battery and new relay will cure the problem.
Thanks,
