HELP - Fan Belt confusion.......
Discussion
I need some help please.
My Fan Belt is too floppy with no adjustment left, after taking a closer inspection I suspect someone earlier in it's life has put the wrong one on...
So I picked one up from TVR Car Parts as they are round the corner from work and that is way too short so it will be going back.
Looked at the alternative parts list link on here and have looked at the suggested parts, I need to check what to get as there is no mention of which model S they are for and even though the lengths suggested are all 1200mm the widths are different?
One is 13.5mm and another 10mm.
So for a 2.8 what do I need please?
Thanks.

What a surprise!
I've always used a 10mm belt, the other is just fatter and will sit higher in the pulleys.
This could could do the job, possibly...
Thanks, that's the belt I was looking at, currently I have fitted by a PO a Gates 6270MC but that's 10mm x 1213mm and is too long.I've always used a 10mm belt, the other is just fatter and will sit higher in the pulleys.

I take it issues have been had with the supplier I mentioned?

I presume we're talking about these guys?As I understand it they bought back whatever spares stock some off the old dealers had as a condition for them to sign up as dealers/distributors for the new TVR.
So imagine the senario, Mr TVR has offered to buy all you spares, you're delving into the depths of your stores finding dusty old stock that's not seen the light of day for years and you find half a dozen unlabeled fan belts. What you do, bin them or take a guess and label 'em up as something old and obscure (2.8 S1) and get some money for them?
Let me think about this...

Although the scenario you gave about the Fan Belts would surely back fire, if they are wrong they go back for credit and as a customer you would not be too pleased, especially if it happened again with something else?

It is just a scenario, the guys at TVR parts could be blissfully unaware they are dishing out wrong parts, "part number says..."And the manufacturing date would suggest I am completely wrong, in this instance

Maybe a Wedge 280i would need the belt I had been given? And the manufacturing date would suggest I am completely wrong, in this instance

Anyway, need to move on to the Oil Filter next which also looks a bundle of fun size wise!
Spotted a Mahle OC102 on ebay which appears on the parts list, any good?

Quite possibly but the Mann W914/2 is a popular choice.phillpot said:

Can this be fitted to the 2.8 as well do you know, only asking as it mentions the 2.9?http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Granada-2-9I-2-9-24... [/url] is a popular choice.
Just checking as I have been unlucky with the wrong parts recently

edit...just did their car part checker and it says its not?

I'm 99.9% sure, Ford have used the same thread/fitting over a huge range of engines, but maybe an S1 owner can confirm?
ETA. If you scroll through the applications list on the Ebay ad you will eventually come to things like Sierra XR4i 2.8

Thanks again for your help

Before you go for another fan belt just check the length you need. Take the adjustment out and measure the length. Most will be about 1200. Then ask your local parts man for a 10mm of that length.
There are two alternative bottom pulleys, and if the engine has been changed or rebuilt at any time it could have either. Furthermore some people have modified the alternator mounting to improve the belt angle or improve access to the rocker box or if an alloy rocker box was ever fitted (which needs more clearance). Assume nothing is as it left the factory (not that they were all the same then)!!!!
It is less likely to be an issue on the 2.9 engine, but I would still make the same assumption.

I have now though ordered a belt, the one the car came with was a;
Gates 6270MC which is 10mm x 1213mm and that was too long,
so now ordered;
Gates 6228MC which is 10mm x 1200mm
Fingers crossed.
I can confirm that the Mahle OC 102 oil filter does indeed fit the 2.8 S1.
There are plenty of filters with the same thread size that will fit, as long as the height is short enough to clear the bodyshell, ie the driver's footwell.
The standard ones listed to fit Ford Capri/ Sierra / Granada are too long.
( unless you fit the remote filter mod as Phillpot has done. )

The Oil Filter currently in looks like it may have been put on the engine and then the engine dropped in the car, looks sooooo close to the chassis? May need the end cutting off...
I wonder if the new filter will come with a new sump plug washer, I believe it's good practice to change it when doing an oil change.
I suppose I should be asking what oil is currently recommended for these old 2.8 engines too?
Barry's is a 2.9 and those are 1200mm belts for GARV.
The filter will not come with a sump plug washer. If the old one is copper then you can anneal and reuse it (hold it with a wire, heat to red heat on a gas ring and plunge into cold water). If steel then, provided there is no damage to washer or seat, it should be OK just cleaned and reused and torqued up correctly.
Oil? These are old engines, with old style clearances, and prefer the old grades! A good 20/50. The favourite amongst a lot of us is Valvoline. Not sure if Eurocarparts stock it at the moment, they certainly did do so.
