Cayman R - Faults & Issues Thread
Discussion
Morning chaps. As a keen R owner and enthusiast, I am always very interested to hear about other peoples ownership experiences, especially when it comes to issues and faults.
I like to think of the R as a very reliable platform, but as with every car, there's always going to be someone who has encountered problems, whether they be minor or huge.
So I thought I'd give this thread a go, where R owners can log and discuss any problems we have or have had.
It might even help some people decide whether to extend their warranty or not when it comes to renewal time.
I've had my R for almost 2 years now and it's currently on 13000 miles. I've had one minor issue in my ownership which was sorted by my warranty, so I'll start off with....
Cayman R Manual
Year: 2012
Miles: 13000
Issue: Fuel gauge wouldn't go to the top when the tank was full. It would only show 7/8ths full.
Solution: Porsche Tonbridge tried everything and in the end they gave me a brand new instrument cluster.

Have always had an annoying squeak from the rear hatch on bumpy roads. I believe it's a 'they all do that' on the 987 Cayman (i.e. a design fault) but is more noticeable on the R because of the firmer suspension. Endless adjustment of the two bump stops did nothing. So, I put a couple of layers of electrical tape over the clear film where the middle hatch rubbers contact the car. The squeak is now all but gone!

Yeah mine did this too. Until a fellow R owner put tape over the same on mine. Such an improvement!2012 Peridot Green Cayman R.
Bought on 28,500 miles
Owned it 3 weeks, now on 29,300 miles
Have a couple of squeaks inside that I haven't traced as yet. One sounds like it comes from the instrument cluster, the other possibly behind me.
Car has the following modifications:
EVOMS intake
IPD plenum
GT3 throttle body
Fabspeed headers with 200 cell cats
Remus titanium system
MASE Engineering map
RSS Tarmac TCAs
Girodisc 2 piece rotors front and rear
Pagid RS29s front and rear
Titanium shims
GT3 master cylinder
Short shifter
Michelin Cup 2 tyres
Has one exhaust outlet (RHS when viewed from rear) slightly sootier than the other but ive been told its nothing to worry about, just the mapping. So have to see how that develops if anything at all.

I've got the same problem, must try this!Other than that, nothing in the 9 months I've had the R.

Bought mine in Dec 2014 with 9,800 miles on the clock, now has 23,000 miles, been all over Europe and enjoyed every minute of driving the car. Only issue was a squeaky boot hatch which was easily fixed at zero cost. A few light mods but nothing major. Best car i've ever owned.
Love it, never selling it.

Had mine since Dec 2015, had a few rattles and squeaks.
First is the boot hatch, after doing some research and talking to OPC was told the alignment on the tail had to be perfect! And as I had a rattle somewhere in the back I took out the trim and padded it with foam tape, put fabric tape on the clear strips for the tail, added foam tape to the metal weight in the tail and re aligned the tail..... no noise! Even the Porsche Tech was shocked how quite it is now
Second annoying rattle was from the drivers door, sounded like a bolt was on the bottom of the door! Turned out to the the rubber stop around the end of the door strap had come off leaving the end plate to rattle on rough roads, simple job replace door strap and silence!
PDK sounded abit off, software was updated and sorted.
Car is now epic! Going in for its Detail and Ceramic tomorrow

Hmm never noticed the squeak from the binnacle, but both Caymans we've had have the tailgate rattle/squeak that others talk about occasionally. Just open it up a bit and enjoy the exhaust sound Bought on 28,500 miles

The only other things that failed in 4 years of very happy ownership were:
The little clutch switch that requires you to have the clutch depressed when starting. It's been bypassed as it's more trouble than it's worth. I have a replacement unit if you want it, it's a bit of a pig to get to. Our others are pdk so not needed.
...and the stereo amplifier under the seat which somehow apparently must have failed in transit once it got to the showroom - it was certainly working when I last drove it
and has now been replaced with a new one
Let me know if you do ever want to talk about the car and I'll pm you my number.
In 2 years and 20k miles I had no major issues, just than a slight squeak in the tailgate and the switch that detects when the clutch is down giving up. Both sorted under OPC warranty.
I did briefly have an issue with the radio going dead (had to be reset a few times), but this seem to sort itself out over time.

Thanks for replying to this Rob. I must admit I had done some digging on the car before purchasing it and knew it was yours. I resisted the urge to contact you as many people wish to walk away from a car when it sells. I must say I was very pleased to read many of your responses on the forum and the attitude and knowledge of which they were written.

I'd be delighted to get in touch and have a chat about it. I have to say I absolutely adore it.
Even now it's down in the New Forest with me as we came away for my wife's birthday.
Drop me a line, I can't find the PM button on here using my iPhone lol.

If we fail then I'll give rpm my number, you get it from them. I'll advise.
I'm oldbob - I'm the GTR lover. My son YoungBob had the Cayman R madded it (very expensively and tastefully imo - I modded my gtr too)
We really didn't want to get rid of it as it was a really great drive - I mean really... Compared to my wife's Cay S pdk - the R will kill it. Response, brakes, handling, noise, seats - like everything turned up to 11. Unfortunately I've not enough space to keep it - and we tried to find local garages/lock ups too..
Well driven (youngbob) I had difficulty catching it with a 630bhp GTR on Silverstone - we maybe did only 2-3 trackdays a year.
We chopped it all in for a 991.2 turbo s - needed somehting straight line that would keep me competitive with my friends at the gtroc (we only did track days with them) and something that gave youngbob a feeling of track porsche type response. (but not too much arse pendulum - he adored the cayman.
We've mates (in the gtroc - who also had Cayman R's and they think the same of the car - you didn't make a mistake imo
Anyway let's not bore others with my accolades - you'd be well advised to talk to youngbob and he'll put you straight and you'll be delighted you've a very genuine competitive car. We miss it already....

Lovely car, tastefully modded and sounded great. I remember a fun day at Cadwell in my old white Cayman S pdk sparring with the two of you. Happy days...If we fail then I'll give rpm my number, you get it from them. I'll advise.
