Paying back Maternity Pay?

Other half was a teacher, and intended to go back after mat leave. For various reasons we changed our mind on this and she handed in her resignation mid way through.
Fair enough, they asked for the Mat money back but despite chasing up twice nearly 6 weeks later we are still none the wiser how much, how & when we need to start paying it back. By my reckoning it will be £4,000+ odd so a significant amount of money!!
As a tax payer I'm furious the public sector are so blase about it all. 2 Family friends (loose acquaintances) didn't pay back the full amount (both had severe health reasons though)...but again it seems a very casual/unregulated affair for what is large sum of our/the tax payers money. Most googling on the matter shows the vast majority have to pay it all back. They just shrug us off when we chase them up ''we'll get round to it eventually''.
Obviously I don't want this hanging over us for forever & a day as it is really effecting our budgeting going forwards. Anyone ever been in a similar situation?

This statutory part should be yours to keep. This clawback should only apply to any enhanced maternity pay. You should check the maternity policy as this should cover this sort of scenario.
Sorry I should have been clearer, yes this was the ''enhanced'' bit, approx 6 months worth - it added up quickly.Yeah, they also over paid her by £1k soon after she went on maternity leave, that was chased up twice aswell before we gave up in the end! Letter received on Monday, requesting £3500. £2500 for Maternity payments, £1000 for salary over payment (schools mistake). Usual ''Apologies for the delay, sorry for the inconvenience, pay us in 30 days''.
Money paid & it was less then we had feared so can't knock it.
Does annoy me how slow/inefficient the council/school were over the whole thing, especially as wife reported the £1000 over payment twice 8 months ago and we reported she wouldn't be going back to school & would need to pay back the monies over 3 months ago.
