Ignition switch problems Vito Van

Hoping someone can help.My 2004 Vito has developed a ignition switch / key problem.Had to call the AA who just lifted it to my local garage.They recon it needs a new switch system (£500)and then programming at main dealers.It,s my work horse but can't justify several hundred pounds on an old vehicles.Any thoughts greatly appreciated.Baz
