Yep header tank is from a Capri and they are getting very hard to track down although a few enterprising individuals have found newer alternatives. The hatter has fitted a Mercedes unit and it looks an ideal alternative. PH thread is:

flea advert for suitable tank is:

The bit bolted to the plenum is the overrun valve and yes it does contribute to the pops and bangs.

Clearly an RV8 if it has that valve. D'oh.
If you need to change the expansion tank then you may as well do the routing mods to improve the flow routes etc. A Merc W182 expansion tank is similar in size and has one less outlet (for the hose mod).
As for the pops and bangs valve. I think I need a new one too!

Whats up with your one mate..I have one that has a small split..I had a new one that I swapped it for to help get a fellow Wedger out of trouble..I can repair it as long as its not split on the actual tank...Around the outlets/Inlets is okay.
There are alternatives as Keith has kindly pointed out or you could go the bling route and get one made..I still have the dimension from when i got mine made...
I sent the drawing to a fellow Wedger and he sent me this..

Depending on where and how badly it's split you might get away as a temporary measure by using a soldering iron to close the split... my first go lasted several months.
They usually split around the hose stubs as there are steel reinforcing inserts moulded-in. Being steel of course it corrodes and when it does it expands and splits the plastic.
I don't think there's an adhesive on the planet that will stick this stuff, it's polythene, polyethylene, polypropylene or poly-put-the-bloody-kettle-on...

Hi Ian.I did use some plastic padding for steam tanks on a split around the bottom outlet on my 280i expansion tank and it was fine for nearly two years
