Folks,

I was under the impression that it was 400mg (2x200mg caps) up to 4 Times a day.

However, having just visited my local pharmacy in Ecuador I bought a blister pack of Paracetamol 1g.

Presumably each capsule is 1g? These are Argentine and I remember from living there that other analgesics tend to have similarly huge pills such as 800mg ibuprofen etc.

Is it just a measuring system difference or are these really 5 times stronger than UK stuff? I'll only take one at a time if that's the case!

Yup. 1000mg or one gram up to 4 times a day. So pop one of them each 4 hours and you'll be fine.

Standard UK Paracetamol tabs are 500mg (or half a gram) each.

Ah yeah of course, I was thinking of Ibuprofen. Thanks very much, this accounts for why they were pricey then as I only need half the tablets!

not for long you won't, don't do that much for more than 3 or 4 days

very easy to do permanent liver damage with paracetamol, very dangerous drug

maximum recommended dose for healthy adults is 3g a day

6g a day over 48hrs can be all you need for toxicity

ask at your local liver transplant specialist for more details wink

Can you provide a citation for the above?

Indeed, whose recommendation is that because the BNF states a maximum healthy adult dose of 4g daily.

That said, I would personally never take the stuff at all never mind approach 4g/day.

some pharma firms have revised their guidelines down to 3g a day
http://www.propharmaconsultants.com/CCG_PDF/38_CCG...

many sources are still saying max 4 g in a day

I'm not a Doctor, but I'm lead to believe that even a week of 4g a day can cause you serious harm

stuff like drinking alcohol, not eating (because you're in pain), can increase your risks

That's a 2 yr old Amercian paper - fairly non conclusive IMO - Paracetamol is known as ahighly toxic substance, many say if it was invented today it would never be passed as safe, however current UK guidelines still sit at 4g per day, and there are many people, who use it to the maximum dose who haven't developed any toxicity at this point - however, like anything, use with caution!

that's 2 years old, how old is the 4g guideline?

many people are using it without toxicity, sure, that doesn't mean it's not a risk - and not many are using the maximum dose day-in day-out with harm, if any at all

If a manufacturer says 'don't use as much' I'll listen to them, it's not really in their interest to have you cut down, so why would they say that?

just use half as much and half ibuprofen or something else

or go and see a doctor for the long term problem

the potential downside is very, very bad
the upside of using an extra gram of painkiller, not so much

Has the recommendation for Ibuprofen dosages been reduced recently? I always thought it was ok to take 4 doses of 2x 200mg (8 tablets a day) tablets a day but when reading a pack recently was surprised to see it states a maximum of 6 tablets a day (24 hour period) eek

so what to use if paracetamol is bad? I thought we're told not to use aspirin these days either? So is ibuprofen the only one that's safe? I never feel it works as well as paracetamol.
