Inspired by our speed thread (I really like CVP's pic), I started looking at mounts again.
Now, everybody knows that whenever someone asks about mounts, they're nearly always pointed at B Hague or Sticky pod or RF concepts for a bulletcam but they always seem geared more for video...

So I was looking at the B Hague stuff and thinking "mmmh, 1.5 kg limit", not really comfortable with the camera plus lens on one of those but great for camcorder.

So I'm hunting around, looking at stuff and find this thread...

www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/183447/0

This guy takes a serious photo and has the mounts to match, they certainly appear beefier than the B Hague lot. And he reckons that's only about $425. Expensive but certainly looks worth it.

But here comes the point of the post (I'm not here to merit the pros and cons of mount a, mount b), take a look at that thread, go to the seventh picture down...

Who on here would be willing to strap your DSLR to the outside of your car, in that manner, and drive around at 30 mph...?

Ive had my dslr on the outside of a camera on my rig at 70+ But my rig was very expensive, and is designed to take 10kg.

the b-hague stuff seems to be a few turned parts and manfrotto suction bases.

the link you show uses someone elses turned parts, and - manfrotto suction bases by the looks of them.

Hi ed.

Mine came from Hagues, but they made it to my specifications. Its based on their 3 sucker one. Believe you me, when you see one of these vacuum cups on the car you will understand my confidence...

To be honest, on my car I'd be more worried about bits of the car or the paint itself coming off!

Good point. Mine was taken using the superclamp which is very effective for gripping rollbars and other bits of the car. I did get a suction mount as well, but I can never get a really good grip in the inside of the windscreen, so I'm pretty wary of using on the outside of the car on its own to support the D100 & extra battery pack (you have to have the extra battery pack on to get the remote release terminal !)

This pic

Looks identical to the mount that came with my b-hague "CMK" kit.

And, I can't see the difference between this b-hague thing

and this one in the link you give

apart from the arms are longer.

The pro mount from b-hague is £399 inc VAT so the US solution is cheaper, but it supports up to 10kg. However, 1.5kg is way in excess of a camera and wideish angle lens, and it seems the bod you posted up is trusting enough on just the large suction mount.

Remember that to get decent blur the pro's I met use around 30mph if they do it 'live', but for the highest quality/really serious stuff they push the car along at 1-2mph!!!!

You could always take a leaf out of the stage lighting techniques 'book'. Mount the camera then have some kind of reastraint that would catch it if the mount fell off. So for instance you attacth the mount to the door skin, but have a cord of some sort attached to the camera and secured to the handbrake for instance. That way the camera will dangle and maybe clatter the car but won't hit the floor.

Matt's and my camera both weigh almost 1.5kg on their own. Add 1/2 - 1kg for a lens and you're heading over 2.5kg static!

Agree about the pushing along at 1/2 mph trick though - quite a few "movement" pics are taken like this, especially if they use a long boom (which is then photoshopped out afterwards).

- er - OK - I had no idea.

Noticed b-hauge do a two mount version that takes up to 3kg for £160 - so perhaps that's a compromise?

I was flabbergasted when I found out!

Yeah, you don't want one of these things bouncing down the side of your car - the camera will probably survive intact, but I doubt the paintwork will!

That should do the trick - will check it out

Yeah - I was almost disappointed when I found out - it seems like cheating to me!

A slight tangent but relevant I think - is strapping a camera to your car while moving on public roads legal?

Errr... I do. Don't want to get done for photography.

Nice pic BTW. I love the small light trail on the body too.
