A German supermarket chain has introduced a new way of allowing customers to pay using just their fingerprints.
Edeka says it will be the first retailer in the world to introduce payment by fingerprint.
Customers will have to run a finger over a scanner at the cash desk to confirm their purchases, and receive the goods.
The total will then be deducted from the customer's bank account.
Customers register for the service by signing an agreement allowing Edeka to debit unpaid purchases from their bank accounts.
Ulrich Kipper, who invented the system, said: "The procedure is unproblematic from a data protection point of view."
He said that a pattern of the fingerprint is saved, but the original print cannot be reproduced.
Michael Bobrowski, from the Federation of German Consumer Organisations, said that the organisation welcomes biometric procedures in general - but said they would have to be regulated by law because of the sensitive nature of the data.
Edeka spokesman, Gert Duschan, said that a trial will be conducted in Ruelzheim, near the Belgian border. If it proves successful the system will be made available for all branches.
Thermal fingerprinting, where a persons heat signature is scanned, is gonna start taking off soon. No two thermals are ever the same, and yet everyone can be identified accurately via this method. Almost impossible to fake, and instant in that it would require no 'checking-out' as it could be done automatically on entering or leaving a shop.
One thing's for sure; the current chip n pin system is really naff. The amount of times I can clearly see what numbers the person in front of me is tapping in at the checkout. If I were so inclined I could mug them outside, pinch their card, and then its much easier to committ fraud than having to forge a signature.

That used to be the case and the technology was reasonably easy to fool - about 2 years ago. The later stuff is significantly harder, if not impossible. If its pretty modern then it will have the pulse sensors, reverse fingerprint and contact sensors built in.... making it virtually impossible to use this type of attack against it.
What you can do of course is to re-create someones fingerprint. Using superglue and exotic oils, you can then take a cast and then using latex recreate the fingerprint. It works 1 in ever 4 attempts (for imperfections) and can fool most systems. The only problem is that it takes days and a serious amount of hi-tech stuff..... better off just holding a gun to the cashiers head, its quicker and simpler and guaranteed to work...!
The problem is when you burn your fingers, or you happen to have no fingerprints at all. Not normally an issue, but when you think that something like 5% - 10% of the population will have problems with this technology it could be something significant. Ok, so its only a shop. But whats to say that they offer the deals only to those paying with fingers, and charge full price to everyone else.... hardly fair....

But almost all of the fingerprint readers will have "blood flow" and "pulse" sensors - detecting if the finger has been severed or not.....
So rather than the boltcutters, it will be a gun or knife.... and equally as Niiice

OK 2 things.
1. CHIP and PIN is there to stop card cloning, not petty theft, CArd cloning cost the industry many times more that the individual thefts.

Interesting - didn't know that. How about the retinal scanning technology? Can the machine tell if the eyeball has been ripped from the socket and is dripping gore down some scrote's sleeve? Suppose it could look for iris movement...niiice...

Was it Mercedes who were thinking of incorporating this technology into car security systems? Then someone pointed out the obvious and unfortunate side-effect
I wonder how long it'll be until things like cars and front doors are reliably keyed to fingerprints, retina scans, DNA or similar.
