Radio head unit nearly caught fire!
Discussion
Car has been in for a full respray and just got it back - awesome job, will post pics on another thread soon.
Had driven for around an hour then decided to turn radio on. No reception as it had fogotten the presets so pushed the button to scan and then got a worrying burning smell. Whilst I was looking around (waiting at lights with roof off) to find the source, smoke started pouring out of the tape slot (yes it is a very old Pioneer unit).
Turned the radio off quickly and thankfully no behind dash fire !
Have now removed the head unit but can't see any visible evidence of burnt wiring in the leads connecting to the head unit.
Anyone any ideas what can cause this ?
If you shorted speaker wires together, can that overload and cause this or would there normally be protection e.g. fuses or thermal trips.
Was going to bin the old head unit anyhow and put a DAB in but don't want to damage the new unit.
Probably a good idea to test the speaker wiring for shorts as it has been manipulated at the door hinges during the repaint - they did a very thorough job and removed the doors and expect the wiring could be brittle at 19years old.
