Underseal Identification Help
Discussion
I am currently recomissioning and tidying up my 1978 MG midget.
One think I wish to do is touch up some of the underseal which has been applied by a previous owner.
This must have been done over twenty one years ago, as that's the last time the car was on the road, and it was quite clearly brushed on.
I'd like to use the same underseal, if possible, so can anyone identify what has been used here?
Thanks.

I thought one of the problems with those bitumen type underseals was that if rust could get established somewhere, perhaps an edge or a scrape, then it could spread unseen beneath the goo.
Yes, I have read about the downfalls of this type of sealer. However, it would be a huge job to try and remove all of what is on there already and then do something with the resulting mess.
Also, the car won't be driven much, especially not when it's wet or salty, so I'm not too concerned about it.
I've read that the Hammerite stuff with added Waxoyl is good as it stays slightly flexible so doesn't crack and allow moisture to get behind it.

I think the product that was used a lot when these cars were new was Ziebart.
Rust proofing of cars in the 60s and 70s was so dire that Ziebart undercoat was sold as a dealer option. Having your Ziebart gave you bragging points at the pub.
Ziebart are still in business http://www.ziebart.com/auto-care-services/vehicle-...
