Has anyone bought themselves to paying over list on a watch before?

I have had a hankering for ages for a Stainless Daytona (the non ceramic bezel variant). I stupidly didnt buy one when the opportunity presented itself a year or so ago, and now they are discontinued the price of them has crept up....

I have the opportunity to buy one brand new unworn at £12 500, seems a lot for a £8000 list watch - but then it isn't an £8000 list watch anymore as it isnt being made. I am in a bit of a quandary, heart is saying yes head is saying no!!

What says the forum?

you can get a late mint one for sub £10k so while overs I would not pay £12.5k !!!

unworn is daft, as the minute you take the stickers off it's a £9.5k watch not a £12.5k one.

loads about also so prices will drop again after the Hype and the £ picks back up and the Ceramic ones falls a bit.

Good shout that, a search on Chrono 24 has bought up some interesting options at the £10k mark, which is a much more palatable uplift. Thank you!

10k still a lot for a used, stainless steel, very much mass produced, chrono that you will see on countless other wrists.

Before you commit I would recommend trying on a AP royal oak offshore (safari model with brown leather strap is very nice for e.g.).

Huge step up, for 10k-11k so basically the same price.

Agree 10k is a lot for a S/S, however I think it'll hold its value 'relatively' well so I am not too concerned about that. I have to admit that I don't often see them in the wild, so don't get the whole "everyone has a Daytona" mantra, but probably due to being in't North as opposed to London smile

Big fan of the AP's and had a Royal Oak 15300 for a while - lovely watch, blue dial is awesome. The offshore's however aren't really my cup of tea, I find them a bit big on my wrist, and a bit casual for me.

I have a hankering for a Daytona but reflection has led to me having second thoughts on the stainless being the one, might pay a little more and get the rose gold on leather but further consideration is warranted!

Thanks for the ideas, much appreciated.

It's interesting to read - I paid over list when I got mine 3 years ago to avoid a waiting list, but still I only paid a bit over £9k. Nice to know it's held its value though.

I don't think I could pay £9K, let alone £10K+ for a Daytona, they're not worth that much and that is coming from someone who has had one from new since April 2005 when I paid £3,790 for it. It is a nice watch but I'd sooner have the watch my wife has, a Rolex GMT II BLNR. I do however have my name on a waiting list for the current ceramic bezel Daytona with white face and I will wait rather than pay over list for that.

As with most things, they're worth what people are willing to pay for them. I like mine, and to me it was worth what I paid - whereas I'm not a fan of the watch you mentioned, and wouldn't pay a fraction of what I paid for the Daytona. Each to their own etc.

You certainly wouldn't get a GMT II BLNR for a fraction of what one would pay for a 2nd hand Daytona!

I agree with you that it is each too their own, however, having owned mine for eleven years I do fancy a change but I will never sell it, probably give it to my youngest son at some point or when I get the ceramic bezel version.

I suppose the nice thing about the stainless Daytona is that you don't see them quite as often as you would see a Submariner.

Op tried to mail you as I'm just about to sell my black face SS Daytona but your account doesn't accept PMs; if you're interested please email or PM me.

Cheers

Rolex must be laughing, £12,000 for a mass produced stainless steel sports watch. Madness.

I wonder what the mark up must be on these watches. I thought they were overpriced at £4,000 years ago. These prices have departed all reality.

Thanks for getting in touch Andy, and apologies for any PM issues you've had, not sure why that wouldn't work!

I'm holding fire just for now, I have a BLNR incoming (list price) so going to decide what to do with that and whether to add to or replace thereafter.

Many thanks anyhow, sure you won't struggle finding a buyer smile

No worries, BLNR is lovely, I actually wear mine much more than I ever did the Daytona as I can actually see the time on it smile

Haha yes, apparently the legibility of the Daytona is an issue! Not sure if the lack of date would be annoying after a while potentially too? I know computers, phones etc have dates on them but I always find if I am signing a document that needs dating a quick glance of the wrist is natural instinct!

The lack of date is very annoying and IMO why the Daytona is a weekend/2nd watch only and will never be as good a daily as a sub, GMT, YM etc

I have trouble seeing the time, forget about the date!

I must admit joking apart date doesn't come into it for me. I never know or remember if I've corrected the date anyway at the end of the month so unless it's a proper date/month movement I don't rely on it.

That was my problem - I sold my white-faced Daytona simply because I couldn't see it! - I was wearing my GMT Master 90% of the time because it was actually legible. Still have the 16700 which I'd never part with, but I have to say that the BLNR is a lovely looking thing.
