scuse me for being non-techie, but my handbook says that I need Mobil ATF-220 for topping up my power steering.

Sadly no-one around Cambridge has this. What's an appropriate alternative?

Cheers!

Don't think it is too critical what you use. The recommended Mobil oil is the same as recommended for the gearbox. So any gearbox oil is probably OK. You can also get bottles of "power steering fluid", cant remember who makes it though.

Noooooooooooo! Yes you can use PAS ATF200 fluid in a gearbox because it is a bit lighter but the reverse is not true and you could damage the pump and rack seals for a start. Thats about £700-800 to fix if you need a new recon rack and pump. Good incentive to get the right stuff.

Most decent motor factors sell the stuff. I got the last lot from an Esso garage.

Steve,

are you sure you can use ATF in a manual gear box, I was told this was a complete no no

Depends on the box and why. Some boxes prefer the lighter fluid others don't. Not something I would do without careful consideration but it has been done. The point I was trying to make was that just because you could use ATF 220 in a box, doesn't mean that any gearbox oil is suitable for the PAS. So many assumptions here that you'd end up convincing yourself that an MGB is a state of the art F1 car...

Just been looking up ATF in my Observer book of Fluids and...

Mobil ATF 220 specification.
Allison C-4
Ford ESP-M2C138-CJ, Ford ESP-M2C166-H
Mercedes Benz Sheet 236.6
ZF TE-ML-09, ZF TE-ML-11, ZF TE-ML-14

Mobil ATF 220 also exceeds the requirements of the former General Motors Dexron IID specification.

Dexron IID has been superceded by Dexron III which is the stuff to use basically.

ANd in addition:

quote:
Mobil ATF 220 is recommended for virtually all passenger car, commercial vehicle, cross-country, and bus transmissions and may be used in some manual transmissions where automatic transmission fluids are specified. It is also recommended for most power steering systems, agricultural and general purpose hydraulic applications.

So if I've got this right, then I just need something which matches or exceeds the specs above?

Thanks for all the replies!
