Putting aside all the other bks associated with the commercial aspects of halloween, just how many pumpkins are wasted each year?

I'm sure not many people like eating pumpkins, but it does strike me as a bit if a waste of food.

Define wasted?
These pumpkins exist because the deamnd is there to cut them up as ornament. If there wasn't, they wouldn't be grown - farmers would use the field for something else.
Would you be upset if that field grew flowers for decoration instead? What about fields paid to be left fallow due to food surplus?

It's a fun event one day a year where people dress up and have a laugh. Try joining in, pumpkins with the kids are fun.

Halloween is great. The one big holiday that is about dressing up silly and having fun rather than buying stuff for people.

My mother's pumpkin pie is to die for.
If 300 million pumpkins have to die just so that one will be used, that I can have pie, all is right with the world.

Pumpkins aside I do find it amusing that for 364 days a year we try to teach our kids not to talk to strangers or accept sweets from strangers yet they're then encouraged to do exactly that by all and sundry on Hallowe'en.

+1.

We carve pumpkins, dress up and go to Halloween parties but I am against trick or treating for this very reason.

The missus is calling me a spoilsport, the only compromise is to only go to my sons friends house's. I haven't suggested the compromise yet..I'd rather get a tub of sweets from Tesco's for my boys to eat.

We had 117 kids visit us last year (most in groups of varying numbers) and all were escorted by parents, loitering at the end of the drive.

My friend's father is a farmer who used to grow these. The large orange things You see at this time of year are developed to be quick growing and flat-bottomed amongst other things.

As a result, they are pretty tasteless, watery and very stringy, barely edible really.

Their sole purpose is to be grown for display, a bit like flowers so nothing is really being wasted.

Halloween isn't great, it's ste!

Every year it erodes a bit more of bonfire night frown That wonderful evening when we can celebrate treason, terrorism, the torturing of prisoners, religious persecution and gratuitous and unnecessarily painful executions.

A bit like the N,P & E forum really... wink
