Saw this thread on the main TVR gassing page. Looks like a red S1 Wedge. Hopefully owner is all OK. Anyone on the forum know who it is?

Early car with aftermarket alloys - it rings a bell, but can't place it at the mo... Glad no-one was hurt.

Interesting comment in the newspaper article about ethanol in modern fuel being one possible cause.

I'd be a bit surprised if the hoses etc. which are compatible with octance would be damaged by ethanol (being a chemist), but it could be right. Ethanol is much more hydrophilic than octane and might strip some water-soluble elements off the internals- hence leaving them compromised. Anyone heard this before?

Not too sure about the chemistry but I have just changed my fuel rail and pump feed hoses as the last fuel rail hoses were spouting petrol and they were only two years old!..Although they may of sat on a shelf for longer.

The insides looked like they had become brittle....However I still have the problem of the clips working lose with the heat from the engine...I used JCS stainless steel clips as well....I might look into using later injectors with the ferrules on instead....

Don't know so much about the chemistry, but as 85% bioethanol has been available in Finland for a while and been very welcome for power enthustiants, it seems to be somewhat different solvent than gasoline. Ethanol solves some stuff that gasoline won't and the other way apart. Running ethanol every now and the on a gasoline-burner keeps the fuel system clean and the other way around, but the whole fuel system needs to be able to handle them both.

There are hoses that can handle gasoline but melt on ethanol and few guys have even found hoses than can hold ethanol in and be submerged in gasoline, but will melt if submerged in ethanol. Nowadays, as ethanol usage is rising, it pays up to use hoses and parts that really can handle both ethanol and gasoline (and time).

Moral is to replace any long runs with CuNiFe pipe, and only use the shortest rubber hoses to join it.
