You would think that they would retain them on the pair of front doors.......as lift raft use in even of ditching etc., or one of the crew being incapacitated that they couldn't get out the cockpit window?I suppose it's a cost saving....?
Trust me the slide rafts are still there and operational in cargo aircraft. Why they used the escape ropes well only the crew will know. Maybe they thought the fire was a lot further forward and opening the doors may have slid them into it.
Also the aircraft attitude may have played a role in that if they were looking out the window on the door on the side where the gear hadn't collapsed all they may have seen is blue sky and then unable to make the call if opening the door will allow them to get out safely.
