In Denial?

ACPO quick to 'clarify' camera comments

Safespeed brings us news today that the ACPO are trying to limit the damage from an article in the Mirror last weekend. The Sunday Mirror reported on comments allegedly made by the Chief Inspector for North Wales in which he appeared to question the efficacy of speed cameras in reducing casualties on Britain's roads. For a man so focused on slowing motorists down this appeared to be a major u-turn.

The Association of Chief Police Officers have been quick to issue a statement however. ACPO's Ian Bell said: "Mr Brunstrom's point being is that with almost 6000 approved sites the majority of casualty cluster locations are now in the programme. We know from the Three Year Report that safety cameras work in reducing speed and casualties."

Opinions vary on the legitimacy of that statement however with many people feeling that with the death rate on Britain's roads refusing to fall, that faith in cameras alone is misplaced.

It's quite obvious that the ACPO are embarrassed at Brunstrom's "unguarded" comments and have come up with some weasel words in an (unsuccessful) attempt to repair the "damage".
