How Do You Tell The Singer He's Got To Go?
Discussion
The lead singer really struggles - he's aware of it, however, he's a founding member and a really nice bloke.
The band are moving from just a rehearsal band to getting paid gigs now, so there's disquiet amongst other band members as they are aware of audience comments about the singer.
If he fell on his sword and said "look guys, I'm holding you back" etc. - problem solved, but there's no sign of that yet.
Now the guitarist, who's flippin ace, might walk soon, because he's frustrated.
The bass player wants to audition other vocalists on the QT, then tell the singer he's out when someone suitable comes along, but that seems underhand.
Thoughts guys?
For context, we're not talking world fame here, just a pub band, but they enjoy it.

A bad singer (or poor front man/woman in general) will ruin it for the whole band and, indeed, the audience who've coughed up cash to see them play. If he's aware of it I'd be having a frank conversation and asking what he's doing about it - if he's that below par there won't be a band left to front.
There are a couple of things that could be wrong that I can think of. As said above tuition will help him a lot - even the worst singers should be capable of holding a note.
One other thing to consider is monitoring. Are you taking your own PA to gigs? If so, consider in-ear monitor/ear defenders for him. They make a big difference to being able to hear what's being played.
Also, have a think about the keys you're playing in. If you can make the songs easier to sing it will be a big help.

Couldn't one of the other members of the band take over the lead vocals? That saves auditioning anyone, just tell the guy 'we don't need you anymore and shut the door on your way out.'
In my opinion people who just sing and don't play instruments are a pain. Learning to play teaches you what I call 'the 3 Ts' - Tempo, Timing, and Tuning. People who don't play often don't have those.
Also, as well as being the most musically inept person in the band, vocalists often suffer from megalomania. They regard themselves as The Main Man, and the others as My Backing Group.
