I have an A4 3.2 Quattro FSI S-line (2006) - just bought it.

It has the RNS-E I believe.

It had a backup copy of the 2013 disk, so Ive duped it on to a Ritek disk (dual layer).

Putting it in and it either says

"Software update CD/DVD. 0220" or "unknown files"

The hardware is H06.

Is this likely to be bad media, incorrect disk, or something else?

I've ordered a replacement 2016 disk, but unsure if I'm missing anything obvious. I say this because with my last car (M3) the firmware update and maps came as a pair of disks and you needed one to make the other work.

Thx

It's a bad burn - all the discs will generally work well enough to be capable of updating the firmware on first insertion, but rarely successfully write for map use.

You need very specific burners for RNS-E, which can be hard to come by now.

2017 ought to be available fairly soon....

Was the old disc reading OK, or throwing errors?

The old disk does the same.

With the screen open says "Software update CD/DVD 0220"
With the screen closed says "insert navigation medium" (or similar)

Perhaps it's just a bad image then. It's over 4.5Gb as needed dual layer.

I've ordered another from website (2016), so best wait until that arrives?

If I have any issues with the new one, any specific brands of DVD? Any ink? DVD+R or DVD-R?

Thanks mate, appreciated

The other possibility is that the laser is worn out in the transport - where are you based? I've got lots of experience with resolving issues with these and have discs you can try

Let's hope not.

I'm in Salisbury mate, SP1 (work) or SP2 (home)

If not I guess

1. try new disk when it arrives
2. copy to better media
3. try OEM disk (even old one)
4. think about laser issues

It reads the first bit OK and also reads CDs, so fingers crossed smile

Thanks

Not local to me then, I'm afraid, as I'm down in the SE.

If the disc doesn't work I would skip 2 as pointless unless you have the right burner, 3 defo worth a try if you can borrow one (it will probably work) and if it does it points to 4 as your only alternative to an OEM disc.

I know a supplier for new laser transports and it's a couple of hours fiddly work to swap it - costs under £100 incl delivery from Taiwan.

Cool thanks mate, I'll cross that bridge when i come to it.

It seems the OEM disks are only £40 on eBay? So may be better to try/borrow an old one and use that?

I'll see what happens I guess. In my BMW it resolved itself having a new disk...

I would assume any disc on ebay is a copy unless it expressly states it's genuine. You can print labels that look almost OEM and unless you can see the colour of the bottom of the disc you won't know until it turns up. If it's anything other than the regular silver you find on a pressed CD/DVD then it's a copy.

YEah, I'd check for a pressed disk if that was the case, and get a refund from PayPal if not.

With any luck the copy will work though.

Thanks for your help mate

Just to add to Adrian's comments I've had *some* luck simply cleaning lasers in the past; less fiddly than complete disassembly and pennies to try. Cotton bud and isopropanol.

If the disc claims to include speed camera locations (it's not part of the standard disc) then it's as POIs that show on the screen and you get no warning apart from the speed limit at the point of the camera - often only when you're zoomed in to 820yds view or closer.

Go into the setup and find where you can select 'map contents' to select - scroll down the long list and you'll probably find a couple with names like 'radar' or 'speed cams' and make sure there's ticks in those boxes - ignore one that says 'navpoint' if it's there. There's no alert tone so they're only useful if you have map view showing

Oh, that's a shame. My BMW disk used to let me know.

Great thoight, I'll play when I'm in the car. No wonder I couldn't find it.

Thanks
