Just curious, for reasons I won't go into, but if one wanted to stash something small away, totally anonymously, for a period of time, can one obtain the use of a safety deposit box which cannot be traced???

I have no experience in this matter what so ever, but in today's day and age of paper trails and the all knowing computer, I would be very suprised if a big company/bank let you wonder in off the street, give them a wedge of notes and get a key to a deposit box with no questions or paperwork.

I thought they would want ID etc, same as opening a bank account. But they have no way of knowing whats in the box.

You have to show various bits of ID to get the box, what you use the box for after that is your affair, no chance of getting one without showing them who you are.

it depends where you want it from in all honesty as there are various relatively secure storage solutions where there is no ID needed and they are protected by camera but in quite public areas where all you need is funds to physically gain access

alternatively I have used a couple of larger storage solutions without providing ID before (just a name and address, verbally) and paid for 12mths lease on my card ... job jobbed

A bank wouldn't allow this and any reputable safety deposit box company wouldn't either - they'd have to confirm your identity when you started renting one. You wouldn't have to give them a full inventory of what's in the box but it would be linked to your name and address.

This would be the case in the U.K. anyway.

Put item in metal box, bury in woods, create map with an X on it, don't lose the map. Job is jobbed

Don't forget to leave instructions with the bank upon death and within your will.

If you have a garden, cache it there. Simple & secure. Dig hole, line it to suit, place paving slab over.

I keep my 'special things' in a fire safe hidden in a far flung part of my loft.

Ultimately it would be findable, but it'd take some effort & determination.

I'd assume it would be traceable. Otherwise people would put all their expensive stuff in a box if they were thinking about divorce...

They'll just find you from your card details which are linked to a bank which is linked to you. Should have paid cash.

Or. Do what I do. Have 2 properties, have everything linked to one. The other property is in someone else's name. You get no post to where you live but still have an 'address' where everything is registered. Nobody will be able to find me, unless they follow me from one property to another. The link between the 2 is not there. biggrin

I believe that there is a storage facility in Austria called 'Das Safe' which still allows anonymous boxes.

Probably not cheap though and a lot of trouble.
