I have purchased suits from Austin Reed for years. The quality had always been good, perhaps it dropped a bit in the last few years.
I do realise they are still operating, since a few stores were kept as part of a buy out by Edinburgh wool mill,

What are the alternatives?
I do not like full on designer suits, my experience of them is they do not last.

I tend to buy fewer, but get them tailored. a well-made suit far outlast a decent shop bought one. Tend to buy 1-2 a year, but still wearing ones 4/5 years old.

currently tailor is http://michelsberg.co.uk/ he's in Leeds and Manchester. Can't fault him

Similar quality/budget to Austin Reed is T M Lewin. If standard do not fit they can alter as well. Leg length is included in the price I think.

I've always used Gieves and Hawkes for my tailored ones - I've never had issues with the quality.

I don't have the time really to go tailored, although I like the idea of it.

If we could stick with off the peg type stuff.

You know a thread like this is going to end up with people trying to outdo each other with how much they spend, before you even click on the title.

It doesn't matter, OP, how many times you tell people you want off-the-peg, it's still going that way.

lol, quite possibly.

However, I have reached an age where I want the suit to last and be comfortable more than anything else.
I have had expensive designer suits in the past, but have always found them to be uncomfortable if wearing for long days, the material is always thin and they crease easily.

Perhaps I should have said, I prefer a traditional suit 2 or 3 piece. I don't like all the modern skinny looking stuff.

I am prepared to be flamed:

Try the top end M&S stuff - they have some good fabric and a variety of fits and styles.

Easy to get the correct fit and not expensive.

I agree with this, even better if you can find one of their outlet stores.

I bought my last two suits for a grand total of £33 from an M&S outlet, they were in the clearance but you can get a good suit from one for sub £100 and they are decent quality.

Another vote for M+S here, seem to wear quite well.

I rate Suitsupply as being good blend of fit and quality for a reasonable price.

M&S is great quality for the money but the fit has to be right (it's not for me).

Disclosure 1: I used to work at M&S head office many years ago
Disclosure 2: I had an M&S sandwich earlier this week
Disclosure 3: There is a Starbucks opposite the Vigo St Suitsupply. I know someone who works for Starbucks.

I like Charles Tyrwhitt.

The trousers can be selected unfinished (which I like), a local seamstress can have them sewn up at perfect length same day usually.

The returns service is good, if something isn't right for you it pops straight back in the box it came in, dropped off at one of the many many hermes drop off points for a flat fee of something like 2.50. Money back in account within a week in my case but I ordered the size down immediately which was with me 2 days later.

I think I got a suit with 2 pairs of trousers for 300 quid, there was a small discount applied from memory. Two or three pairs of trousers is most important as the trousers tend to be knackered way before the jacket is.

quality (for the money) and service from CT is great in my experience. the shirts usually at 4 for 100 quid are also really good for the price, generous cut and non-iron so they still look crisp at the end of the day.

Mine.

Expensive. Good. Retiring soon.

I hate suits.

Wear them at weddings, funerals and court appearances.

I rate SuitSupply very highly.

Some of the higher end M&S stuff is great value, but doesn't tend to come in a variety of fits.
