4K Receiver & Projector combo...
Discussion
Looking to get SkyQ soon and will probably take the opportunity to upgrade my 10 year old (1280) Epson projector and Denon amp / receiver.
The combination would be primarily used for watching sport and playing games, with less focus on TV / movies / Bluejays / DVDs etc.
What do the experts recommend and are there any reasons to wait 0-6 months (new releases / imminent technology) rather than buy in the next few weeks?

Budget?
Flexible!<£10k all in, to include projector, receiver, cabling, screen (if the existing one won't be up to the job) and installation.
Prefer to pay <£5k, so the key issue is whether paying the extra improves the quality sufficiently (based on planned usage) or whether it's more about paying extra for future-proofing.
All advice gratefully received!

I should add that I anticipate that i could achieve a vast improvement with the Sky picture (even with the current equipment) simply by moving to SkyQ and making some practical changes to the layout, as currently the projector is fed via a Coaxial input (long story)!!
With a 6ft screen I think I can probably make some huge improvements, without spending a fortune.

At those sort of screen sizes I'd seriously consider the need for a projector at all (especially being fed 576 max!) and look at a TV.
An electric screen is already in place and neatly drops down over some wall pictures so a TV wouldn't work in this set up. Going for a 4k projector seems like it would be overkill though?!sidicks said:

What do you need it to do? I'd imagine not if you're not wanting it to display 4K or split the signal to another monitor (like to your tv for instance).
I guess the amp/receiver is purely for driving the speakers and combining the DVD player, Sky Q and PS4 signals and sending them to the projector?! Are these all already FULL HD signals or can they be upscaled?LaurasOtherHalf said:

Does this mean the existing Denon AVR4306 is still up to the job, or could this usefully be upgraded?
What do you need it to do? I'd imagine not if you're not wanting it to display 4K or split the signal to another monitor (like to your tv for instance).The problem is that the switches that do the job are about £150. The 4306 is a very good receiver, so I am guessing the cost to change to something of a similar quality would be much more.
That is the annoying part about AVRs being such all in one solutions, the tech goes out of date, but amps/sound quality don't. Even the cheapest 2016 Denon would be HDCP2.2 compatible for less than £200, but won't measure up to your 4306 in sound quality.

Upscaling is snake oil, put a DVD in an Upscaling Blu Ray player and you're not going to get Blu Ray quality images, otherwise why would anyone buy Blu Rays?!On a 6' screen (unless you're sitting 4' away from it) I'd imagine you'd see the biggest jump in quality in changing to a full HD projector and Blu Ray player. I'd recommend 3D capability as well, I know I seem to be the only one who likes it but on the big screen you really get the extra dimension that adds something to the experience.

I am going through a similar process at the moment, and am finding that an external switch for 4K is still cheaper than upgrading my AVR to deal with the increased resolution.

Thought about going second hand? nearly new AV Receivers seem to be worth buttons on eBay etc, more than likely for the exact reason you state!The problem is that the switches that do the job are about £150. So what price is a decent full HD projector (and which one is PH's recommendation)?On a 6' screen (unless you're sitting 4' away from it) I'd imagine you'd see the biggest jump in quality in changing to a full HD projector and Blu Ray player. I was initially looking at one of these;

But Sonys lack the trigger that I need for my system so it wouldn't work for me. As well as being available in white for a decor friendly finish there is the earlier model still available (this one only came out a couple of months ago) that is practically the same for around £1500.
For a little higher end I went for JVC although I bought second hand (risky with projectors I think).
Personally, for a 6' screen you don't need to go any higher spec to get a great looking True HD cinema

Do you need a 12v Trigger out to make the screen come down when it switches on? Also you need to look at throw ratios so the distance from your screen would be a good help.

The current set-up has a 12v trigger, so i'd want to keep that the same with the new projector.I was initially looking at one of these;
