music for grannies

its my grans 78th birthday next week, so I've bought her a basic mp3 player for her birthday.
The plan was to put all the music she has on records onto it, but I wanted to fill it with a few as a surprise so she could use it straight away. Its a surprise so it'd look a bit weird if I started going though all her albums.
So far I have ABBA, cliff and the carpenters ready to go on the mp3 player. That is my knowledge of s
tey Gran music, I am tempted to fill the rest with Dead Kennedys, Ramones and joy division... happy birthday.
Can anyone suggest run of the mill Gran music. Naturally i'll dump a classic fm album or two on to it.

Surely you or your parents have some idea of what sort of music she likes. If you don't I question whether you would actually want an MP3 player.

Bare in mind that Granny would have been mid 20s by the early 60s so would have been aware of the music around. Also she would have been 30 in 1968 or so.

It might help if you could give us her age. A granny can be anything from 50 to 90 odd

You know her birthday. So stick in a couple from the charts on significant birthdays - 18th, 21st. Presumably she is/was married, so stick some tracks on from the year preceding the date she got wed - she'll have been 'courting' then, so these will be the years when she remembers the music. Maybe some from when her children were born, but to be honest, parents are often too busy parenting to find and enjoy new music. What's her favourite movie? Even instrumental/incidental music from soundtracks can transport a person back to another time, so try a few from soundtrack albums too.
"Being a teenager" wasn't really a 'thing' back in the '50s so she'll have been aware of music at younger than 18, but it'll have been what her parents' generation were listening to back then. Radio1 didn't launch until late 1967, in response to Radio Caroline in 1964. Granny would have been between 26 and 30 when those stations first went on air.
