Was taking some pictures on my 300D at a family party at the weekend and they just didn't seem to have the atmosphere I was looking for.

Then decided to switch off the flash, and what a difference!

With flash:

I'm liking the moves in number 2! Very groovy, yeah baby

Seriously though, it made a hell of a difference!

Can I join? I pretty much always find that on-camera flash is too harsh and much prefer natural light

I only use flash to fill in just a bit. Available light rules . . . must have a steady hand though.

Nice pic.

If you had a 580EX you could underexpose up to 3 stops and get the best of both.

Thanks for all the nice comments. No tripod was used, just handheld. Out of about 10 pictures, this was the only one that wasn't blurred to too much light. Just seemed to be lucky with the heads blocking the light source

Does look a bit 70's

Actually, I think that's a very good shot - and especially if you managed it handheld.

As an addition, some shots which showed a little more blurred movement in the "dancers" might also be effective.

Perhpas you could find a PS plug-in filter effect to recreate the "dry ice" effect of the 70s too.....

...then,

Stop it Beano! This started off as a serious post!

You're right - much better than flash - and of course that's how the eye sees it. I much prefer ambient light to flash; having a fast lens helps too.

Looks like the sort of party that Russ would approve of:

"what an atmosphere"

I am member No. 3. I have a deep dislike for all flash that is pointed dead-on. 99% of the time it ruins photos IMO.

By the way, the second shot is great - could easily be a flier for a seventies night!
