SEO - any recommendations?

Has anybody out there used an SEO company and been pleased with the results? We're on to our second one now and after decent first impressions, both have just seemed to be a waste of money.
We're in law, and the area is pretty specific and I'm fairly sure few or even none of the competitor firms bother with SEO. Our Wordpress site is nicely designed and we try to blog on relevant topics, but we still don't seem to move much from the bottom of the first page.
Are we just wasting money on this, or are there good companies out there that actually deliver?

I'd be happy to have a look, we run SEO campaigns for everything from small local agencies to international travel brands and work almost exclusively with Wordpress.

Site looks visually appealing although not checked many of the on-page SEO elements.
But looking off-page, there's not that much pointing back at the site. That there is isn't particularly high quality and more to the point, has only just appeared!
I see a long period with only 3 referring domains and then that shot up from 3 to 43 since 13th October.
It needs more stuff pointing at it. Needs more relevancy in backlink sites. And the links need to be given a bit of time!
META Titles & Descriptions aren't the worst but could possibly stand a bit of work. ALT tags are poor, missing an easy trick there.
That's only bare basics as there's a whole lot more than that. You say you're doing blog posts? That's great but do you have a Social Strategy to get traction from those posts?
There's enough there to keep you going for a bit!

)No - the current SEO lot have been with us for about a year. Before that we were using a different company, probably stopping with them in about July 2015.
This current outfit delivered noticeable results (local rankings for example) very quickly, but then nothing seems to have changed.
