Hi All,

I purchased an M140 a few months ago and was interested in the M-Performance exhaust...
Dealer give me the attached document and stated that the exhaust would be available in the New Year.

£865 for the silencer and then c.£250 for each chrome tail piece (each!) or c£400 each for the carbon tail piece.
Plus fitting...

All feels a bit too expensive for noise only unless the current chrome tail pieces fit...
And of course if the noise is worthwhile in sport mode and not deafening at motorway speeds (the dealer said they fit an M Performance unit to an M4 and it was so loud he wondered if it was road legal... he didn't know if it was in sport or normal when it was being revved).

Anyway, I'm sure somebody will get one soon... please share your experiences when you do.

Alternatively, can anybody recommend a switchable exhaust for the M140? I appreciate that the warranty will expire for the exhaust if I use a non-BMW part but I can live with that.

Cheers.

keep the original exhaust to one side in case it has to go back on again. For the price of the BMW one I'd be looking at aftermarket anyway, I daresay Eisenmann or Akrapovic could make something that sounds better for the same money.

I had the BMW performance exhaust fitted to my M135i hike I had it. I believe that the same exhaust will directly fit the M140 too and if you picked one up second hand you get one for around £350

In normal mode the tone was deeper than standard, but definitely not intrusive or overly loud.
In sport mode it was louder as you would imagine, but again it wasn't overly loud and had a lovely tone to it.

Only thing to bear in mind is that they are pretty loud on cold start up, but that subsideds after 20 seconds or so.

For me, if I was to buy another 135 / 140 I wouldn't think twice about fitting the M Performance exhaust again.

I replied to your post in another thread, but I bought a spare backbox on ebay, had it cut open, perforated tubes welded up then the box closed and swapped the exhaust. Cost about £250 all in with a BMW clamp (£50 ish!)

Your car sounds great Max.

Apologies for being dumb but when you say you cut open the exhaust and welded shut the perforations - what does that mean exactly and why does that 'simple' mod created so much more noise?

Also, on the video you say that you can hear the exhaust actuator switch but it is unclipped. Could you please explain what this does, where, why unclip it?

Re. the noise, is this about the same level as the official m performance exhaust and what is yours like at motorway speeds ie not a drone?

Cheers

PS - £50 for a bmw clamp - is this more sophisticated than it sounds or are BMW having a laugh? (What did you need it for?) .

See here: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/attachment.php?at... (my welder filled in all the tiny holes in the pipework)

If you listen carefully you can hear the actuator move but I'd removed the spring so it wasn't attached to the 'flap' (it was wired open). I didn't like the single exhaust on cold-start and it was also even louder with one exhaust only on cold start from memory.

Re. the noise, is this about the same level as the official m performance exhaust and what is yours like at motorway speeds ie not a drone?
I'd say so, don't remember any difference at motorway speeds.

It's a weird sleeve clamp, to fit the performance exhuast you have to cut the system. The clamp then joins the two sections back together:

Hi, I've had an MPE fitted to my M240i for about 2 weeks now. Here's a vid of the exhaust;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YOgm0K4ugU

Initial start up produces a very much deeper, more baritone note. The car didn't sound like no slouch to begin with but the MPE just builds on that and it refines it somehow. On the move, in comfort there is more noise but unless you boot it, it's not all too noticeable - however in sports mode is were it really shines. There is a definite more keener edge to the sound, nothing like my Z4M but you can now hear that straight 6 noise come through... there are also plenty more burbles on the overun which are far too addictive..

I've done about 1000 miles on the exhaust, used in a few different driving situations and have to say I am pleased with it. On the motorway there is no noticeable drone. It's perhaps not as loud or cost effective as a seperate aftermarket exhaust but I like the fact that it doesn't make a racket until you're on it. Although, the noise insulation inside the car means that unless you crank the windows down it still isn't massively loud.

Lites - where did you get an m performance exhaust from? I was told they were not available.
Also, would you mind sharing how much it costs you for purchase/ installation?
Cheers

I got it fitted from Cotswold BMW, they had one come into stock and I snapped it up first. I went for the Carbon tips over the chrome, they were a bit more dear but I couldn't help myself - they just looked so damn good. (I've attached a pic of this below). Fully fitted it came to about £950 or so. A bit more dear then it is now I think, because the price has come down recently (There a thread on the BabyBMW forum).

Yes I agree, the ends look awesome.
The price you got, assume that included fitting?
Irrespective I need to chat to my dealer as he was confused. c. £900 for the exhaust and then another £800 for the two carbon tips plus fitting!
Cheers.

Just called Costwold BMW (Cheltenham).
Chrome tips. £780 plus £105 fitting.
Carbon. £ 885 plus fitting.
However, their stock will not be replenished until mid January.
This was the same message (timescales) that my dealer provided.

I went back to my local BMW dealer (in the North West) and he says that the exhaust with carbon tips is around £1,000 cost to them so couldn't get anywhere near the pricing discussed (hence they are talking about c.£1,700 plus fitting (gulp!).

Has anybody else priced the 140 MPE up?

Errrr, check out the first post on the 135/235/140/240 facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/497396946956476/

M135i MPE Chrome Tips - £629
M235i MPE Chrome Tips - £656
M140i MPE Chrome Tips - £690
M240i MPE Chrome Tips - £680
MP Grills £78 across the board
M235/M240 MP Styling Kit - £920

Since all the BMW dealers have access to the same parts from the same BMW(GB) warehouse, i don't see why your local dealer can't match this price (inc VAT, exc. fitting).
No affiliation, etc.

Hi all, I have an M140i Shadow Edition on order and have just had some good news - it`s due into the dealers on the 20th. I had been told that it would be early January.
I have been trying to resist the MP exhaust, but have succumbed today and ordered one. I got a best price of £895 fitted from Cotswold BMW for a carbon tipped one and my supplying dealer Wollaston BMW are matching the price.
Happy days - looking forward to my first BM !

Good to know. My long-awaited 440i M Sport arrives in two weeks and I think I might go for the MPE. Wollaston BMW are quite close to where I live so might have to go knocking on their door! £895 fitted for the carbon tips is too good to resist.
Congrats on your new car.

Hi, my M140i Shadow Edition was delivered yesterday and first impressions are that it is great, although it has been mainly motorway commuting so far.
I was a little concerned that the M Performance exhaust might be a little intrusive, but it is not at all - I can only imagine that the standard exhaust is pretty quiet, so I am glad I went for the MPE. If you are considering the MPE, I can recommend it - the exhaust note is great.
I am off to Thailand for a month, so I don`t think I will get a proper drive in before Friday, apart from the trip down to Heathrow, but that is more motorway!
