Got this set of wheels off Ade's 390se. Cost of refurb is crazy so I was thinking of having a go myself. Rims look good but the lacquer needs to come off before the polishing can start.

Any suggestions on what to remove the remaining lacquer with please?

Once done the main part of the wheel will be treated to a coat or two of gloss black and a new set of bolts will be procured for the rebuild.

Should be good practice for doing my set in the near future.

Cheers Karl.

Hi mate

I think there are two ways...

1. Using 240 / 400 / 600 / 1000 / 1500 / 2000 to get a polished finish.

Or

2. Nitromors..Although test on a small area first...Im sure there is a Nitromors automotive?.....

(Just read a good tip from a wheel refurbing forum)
Use cling film and lay it over wheel once you have covered it in nitromors.! I would say it work's ten times better than just applying nitromors on its own.!!

Also if you are painting alloy then you will need an alloy primer...Like etching primer...

Cheers Zig

I did say Nitromors when I was discussing it with Ade yesterday. But neither of us were sure if it's safe on ally wheels?

I'm sure it will be a pain in the Harris either way ;-)

Hi Karl, I did my mk1 mr2 wheels a few years ago ., I started off with nitromors paint stripper to remove the remaining lacquer , then I wet sanded them with three different grades of wet and dry, can't remember .which grades I used exactly, nothing to course, I ended up buffing with t-cut then polish. I was well pleased with the finish , and got them all done over a weekend..
cheers

Thanks Martin

Sounds like a plan. Did you lacquer them after the polish or leave them so they can be repolished?

Cheers Karl.

Nice find Glen. I didn't think there was a hope in hell of getting them. Can you find the TVR centre decals though? ;-).

I left them without lacquer . Just kept them clean using the waterless wash, with the added carnauba wax. This helped stop the dirt from sticking. I think I may have polished them once with Autosol aluminium polish just to brighten them up.

If said crazy refurb price was less than £500 or so i'd bite there arm off, after doing one set myself i've vowed never to refurb a set of alloys ever again! It's far more of a pain in the arse job than one can possibly imagine.
800quid mate 200 per wheel!

I'll have a go for that ;-)

I know I've just read it mate ;-).

I remember seeing it a while back and just looked again to find the link to Split Rim Designs for the bolts.

Did you use a mop to polish the rims?

Cheers Karl.

No they're new rims , from split rim desighn but they we're a fxxking nightmare to deal with and I never actually got the bolts. I got them from a place in st.Albans , so much cheaper. I,ll find out what the place is called for you . I think I paid £60 the lot !

I have a wood lathe and made a timber plate that I could bolt the outer rim to and used wet and dry through all the grades, they came up a treat....
Way easier if you can spin the rim.

A friend of mine bought some minilites off me for his P6, and put them on the car, jacked up the rear and used a wire brush on them with the wheels spinning in idle. Came up a treat!

Mind ur fingersrotate The rotation thing seems like a good idea but how you gonna polish up around the bolts ? IMO just split them .
