My son is looking to buy a mk5 golf Gti . He fancies a dsg but some say those gearboxes are unreliable. Any experience out there ?.

I've just got rid of my 2004 A3, 3.2 Quattro DSG which had 91000 miles and still working perfectly.

Swapped it for a an S4 with DSG/S-tronic box, I like them.

Check to make sure the dsg oil has been changed every 40k miles, and ensure changes are quick and smooth both up and down the gears in auto mode i.e left in D, and on steering wheel paddles, in sport S and tip tronic. Any flashing prnds lights is a bad sign.

Everyone thinks it's the mechatronic units which are the cause but have a read of the thread below, some useful alternative solutions to try before going down that route

I loved my DSG Mk5 GTI, the gearbox is a perfect match for the engine. As above as long as it's had the 40k oil changes should be fine. Also the clutch packs tend to last the life of the car, unlike a manual which could well be needing a new clutch with the sort of mileage most Mk5s are on.
