I'm sure there's been threads on this before but...

£700 for a service on my Disco. (14-plate, 30,000 miles). Hunter's of Derby.

That's ridiculous - I thought BMW was bad.

That's taken the shine off the whole Land Rover experience. It's the last one I'll buy.

Did you not buy the service pack for it?

£699 for 5 services.

Bargain.

Wait until you get a price for the 7 year service which includes belts etc.

I have a 2010, so mine needs doing in just under a year. It's very expensive.

I think I few owners will be getting a shock as it's a maximum time of 7 years, so the older D4s regardless of mileage will require them to be done

I wasn't offered it when I bought it, I don't think.

I think I'd remember if somebody had spelt it out to me, quite how much I could save.

The service cost is enough to put you off the brand altogether.

Did you shop around/negotiate?

Prices vary considerably between dealers, even from the same group.

^^ this. Just did a ring around for my MY12 Disco - price for the same service varied by £160 (from memory, not got details with me). I didn't go with the cheapest in the end as it was the furthest away and wasn't worth the extra mileage/hassle of taking it there.

I know it's still expensive but you should be able to get that down to £550 with a bit of calling around and negotiation - that's what I just paid for the second service on my '15 D4. (Hatfield's Pickering).

Mine was around £600 last year and I have the seven year service next year. Am comforting myself tha the saving in tyres compared to an xc90 is covering the extra service cost!

Try servicing anything that size from a premium brand. Not to say £700+ isn't a hefty amount, but it's far from unique.

It's still a lot of money for what you get in return however.

A 'normal' service is what £30 of oil and £20 of filters. Plus maybe an hour in total on the vehicle. With 95% of the service just being 'looking' at bits on the vehicle and ticking a box on a clipboard to say they looked at them.

Servicing a "premium" vehicle is no more challenging or different from doing the same thing on a non premium vehicle. They just rip you off more.

Any time left over is then used for them to list items they deem need replacing, but are actually fine. While wanting to charge you well over the odds for the privilege.

I know about the service job, I was a mechanic once. The cost is in both the skill of ripping into the vehicle and replacing those parts and the trained eye that knows what to look for when the finger on the other end of the brain stem is ticking the box to say its fine to go.

As for your last sentence, are you accusing his garage of something? Because that's a pretty interesting statement you're making.

One of the things you look for when you service a vehicle and the part the driveway know it all's always get wrong, is you are objectively looking at the vehicle to see if a part will last another 16-20k miles without failure. To many guys are obsessed with the last 16-20k its just done and don't renew for the future.

As neither of us are remote viewers or omnipresent, we'll never know though will we.

My Z4 goes to a Specialist a big service is £300 cheaper then a main dealer. Mercedes charged me £450 for my E Class first service 12 months old 5k miles all they did was change the oil and filter there could and was not anything else they could do. My D4 is due its second service in March I will certainly shop around

I twice have had the misfortune of experiencing exactly this, maybe not high cost items or mechanical, but they are chancers, picking up extra revenue when they can - both were from the same (non-LR) dealer. First they claimed the engine management system needed a software upgrade. When I picked up the car, the job sheet had "no upgrade needed" but scribbled over. I got a refund. And again recently they said my wifes car that was 1 yr old but only 2,700 miles needed new wiper blades! No chance they were needed. Also flogged some window treatment - I had a go at her for not saying no to either.
