They only buy the car to look successful and haven't a clue how it works nor the inclination to set it up

  • Stereotype number 2 - however I have insight as someone I care about hasn't touched the Infotainment, Bluetooth setup nor driving modes since buying a 1 series.

At least she doesn't drive with the phone in hand though! Yes, it will change the tend.... however only if the Police pay attention. I see at least 3-4 people a day on mobiles actually holding them in hand chatting away.

Beats me. The whole Bluetooth/Nav/Telephone thing has become mainstream and is fitted to a hell of a lot of cars. If you have a handsfree there's no excuse not to use it.

Older cars need this retrofitting but if you want to take short calls whilst travelling it is, IMO, essential. Perhaps this will encourage people to do that retrofit.

My phone stays locked in the boot whilst I'm driving. Because I have a smartwatch and a handsfree I can use any systems I need to on it remotely - all without ever taking my eyes off the road, or my hands from the wheel.

Not harsh enough! I think it should be 6 points and a £1000 fine.

I don't see it very often, so i think the message has filtered through to the vast majority. When i DO see people with their phones by their ears, it's always been a white van man.

The biggest problem at the moment though is use of phones to do other things - WhatsApp, Instagram. Much harder to spot.

They do. Some of them safe and useful. Some of the distracting and deadly.

How do you educate people to only do the safe and useful stuff? Driving should take ALL your attention!

They could raise it to 12 pints and a £10,000 fine and it would make no difference at all, there aren't enough Police out there to catch them, that's why mobile phone use while driving is still rife.

Now if there were far more patrols out there catching offenders and issuing fines, you would hear about people being caught in the news a lot more and would put people off. in fact if you were to hear it from from friends and word of mouth that people were getting regularly caught it would have a far better effect than the relatively empty threat of a fine that there is no one to issue.

Ah right so how did we all cope say 10 or 15 years ago.

Verbally talk to each other instead of via a six inch screen !

But what if the person that you want to "verbally talk to" isn't in the car?

I have a theory about this. Some vans are so noisy that hands free is useless.

I'm not saying it's right - but I think that's why they are one of the worst culprits.

The Handsfree in the Transit is awful, i have to shout for the person on the other side to hear me clearly.
I can hear them perfect though.

I think the microphone is hidden in some obscure place?

Really? What if I am calling son to say we shall be late picking him up due to traffic? What if I want to check the address or map of where we are going? Lots of legitimate reasons why I, as a passenger, want to use my phone. Not illegal and suddenly I am penalised because other people unable to keep within the current law.

Maybe I should be banned from using sharp kitchen knives too because some people have been using them to stab people.

Cars , vans etc with no hands free, get a Parrot Kit £90
Just fitted my 10 tonner with one in place of the old phone cradle.
Works well.
No excuse for anyone driving with a phone in hand or stuffing their face with a pie from the garage.
Should be instant penalty & points with phone confiscated.
Then a fee to collect it after a month.
