Having bought an iPhone 7 plus as a gift for my sister she decided she wanted an S7 and as she had only used it for a couple of days I put it on Gumtree.

Got a call from a posh guy offer £650 who wanted to meet in a posh bit of town so I headed in and met up. He looked decent enough and had a look at the handset and showed me the cash. I handed over the phone and he done the old switcharoo for fake notes.

Headed to the police station and waited 20 minutes for someone to even say hello and waited about 45 mins to talk to an officer. In that time someone was trying to hand themselves in but were told to go sit in a corner as the cops discussed who collected the xmas night out money in another room.

I got interviewed and was told I has little to no chance of seeing anything again. They never even asked what car I was in, my reg number etc. On route out the wanabee prisoner was still sitting trying to be arrested.

This morning I decided to track the thief down and using some basic detective type skills I find him and arrange for him to meet one of my guys to buy an iPhone!

Called the police and told them not only had I got him but also a car full of plebs one of which had a crowbar and asked them to come and get him. They said they would have some plain closed detectives on route in 5 mins and after 20 mins I called back. They decided to send 2 officers in full police clothing in a marked police car who jumped out, walked past the thief who was fully described and grabbed a guy the wrong age, colour and wearing completely different outfit.

In less than 3 hours we had found this organised gang of fraudsters, had descriptions of them and had been on them for 40 mins only to be screwed up by the police themselves!

I'm sure we can bait them again but I'm wondering if there is any point!

Why'd you not check the cash was real at the time? Easily avoidable.

He did a quick switch as it was in a deposit envelope and he put it back in his pocket when looking at the phone.

Well you learned an expensive lesson to double check next time - at least it wasn't considerably more. I'm not the biggest fan of the police, but it sounds like they made some efforts. What more can be said.

should have used the fake cash he gave you to buy back the phone from him, he wouldn't see that coming!

Out of interest, why would they ask about your car/reg?

For CCTV. He was standing at my car for 5 mins so it would be a good reference point

You sound awesome! Perhaps you could set up a rival crime fighting organisational which will slowly put the Police out of business!
You could call it "Uber" (after yourself).

The officers involved will no doubt be reprimanded. Let's just say, they won't be running low on Chunky Monkey any time soon!

Wait...

You bought your sister a gift of an Iphone 7 and after a couple of days she decided she wanted a different phone?

Are you kidding?

What use what your number plate be? The police do not have the time and resources to request, burn off and sit through hours of CCTV to find your car and the bloke stood next to it for a phone theft.

Yes it may be wrong but I would vent your anger at the government and your local mp for the cuts to the police service. They could have easily just given you a crime reference number but looks like they did actually turn out and had a go.

I understand your point but it would have taken 30 seconds to go to the store with the big cameras outside , say can we see the footage for the 10 min time segment I gave them and see the big silver car. I did get a crime reference number but turning a blind eye to crime is not a healthy route.
