noise from under my 996
Discussion
hi im new to porsches and new to pistonheads but i have a 996 and the is an increase in noise (coming from possibly underneath and towards the back or middle of the car) when i get over about 40mph and seems to be a little louder when i am in gear and accelerate. it is going into lancasters on friday but i just wondered if any one else has experienced this , or has any idea what it might be . one suggestion was a wheel bearing , another was a bearing in the differential or gear box.
Ben,
what 996 is it? If its a turbo late 03 onwards and you are getting a rattle in higher gears at low revs then this believe it or not is normal. It is the front diff and it is because porsche changed the tolerance in the diff for reliability but this was the negative effect.
I know because mine rattles like a tin can!

Hi - new here, from an experience felt compelled to reply to as I have benefitted from the wisdom elswhere within these pages! My 4 year old 996 was making a lot of noise from the rear. The OPC diagnosed wheel bearings, and quoted about £500 per side to replace.
I checked with a few independents who all expressed huge surprise having never had to change a wheel bearing on a 996 of this age and milage - it turned out to be tyre noise due to low tread remaining - 2 new rear tyres and the noise completely disappeared.
