Vantage Door Speaker Problem
Discussion
Noticed last week that the drivers side door speaker on my Vantage seems to be hardly working. It's not completely dead, but even if I push the balance all the way to the right, the sound is very muffled to the point where I can only just make it out with my ear right next to it. With the balance on normal, it sounds like only the passenger side speaker is working. Car is an '06 model with standard audio setup.
Any ideas as to what might be the problem?

Hello Matt,
Quick question, does the car have factory Bluetooth? If so, get the radio or CD running, sit in the passenger seat and then stamp your foot on the angled panel under the glovebox (where your feet would normally rest). If the audio suddenly returns then it is more than likely the bluetooth switcher relay. It is a small relay that switches the front speakers between bluetooth and the other audio functions. The relay is situated in the CEM (Central Electronic Module) area behind the aluminium plate held in with 8 T30 Torx screws. There's no need to remove the old one, just unplug it and plug the upgraded version in, which is made be me for AM...
Hope that helps.

Not sure if it has Bluetooth or not, but I'll try that later tonight and see if it makes any difference.Quick question, does the car have factory Bluetooth? Hitting things with a hammer (or my feet) I can manage, but tracing wiring back to the amp is way beyond my technical capabilities, so I probably have to get the dealer to look at it if above doesn't work.

Bluetooth didn't show as an option when I checked the original specs for my car yesterday.
However, I turned the stereo on and yanked the volume up to max quickly which seemed to 'trip' something in the door speaker and it's now working fine at all volumes on both sides. Bizzare...
It's easy to check if you have the component that causes the problem. Just do step 1 and you'll see the switcher kit:However, I turned the stereo on and yanked the volume up to max quickly which seemed to 'trip' something in the door speaker and it's now working fine at all volumes on both sides. I don't have any steering wheel controls for a phone, so assume my car is without the bluetooth option. In which case it can't be the bluetooth module causing the problem?
Each car I've replaced the module on has had Bluetooth controls so I honestly don't know if non-BT cars still have the component. But it's so easy to check and it would rule out the most common cause of the problem while you're trying to figure this out. If you have the tools (T27 torx bit and ratchet or driver), it takes 5 minutes to pull the panel, see if the component is there, and put the panel back in place. If it's there, order James's updated module to replace it and chances are you've solved the problem. If it isn't there, it only took 5 minutes to confirm whether or not it's the problem. Honestly, it's one of those things where discussing it takes far, far longer than actually doing it.telum01 said:

Thanks. As it's working ok now I'll wait and see if the problem re-appears and then pull the panel if it does.Maybe bluetooth is the same as cruise control in that all the gubbins exists within all cars regardless of spec and it's just the steering wheel pod that's the extra component.
