C2H - Contract to Hire

I've got a potential new job opportunity but the recruiter has mentioned it would be as a contract to hire position.

Anything I should be aware of with these? Should I be wary?

Or is just like a different form of probation?

Last time I was told that I worked for the company for 3 years on contract then I left. A woman I work with now was in the same boat and she's just been given a perm contract
