Can a customer request to see an invoice for work done to their property, under insurance?

i.e. the invoice is from the contractor, addressed to the insurance company, but the work has been done to customer's own property.

Can the contractor just provide a breakdown of work done, or do they have to provide a copy of the invoice, if requested?

They can ask...

The invoice value is simply not relevant to the policyholder. A breakdown of work, absolutely. But I don't see why there's any value in an invoice. If there's an issue with quality of work, then comeback is via the insurer.

Yes, agree with the points you've made. But, if said customer insisted, for reasons unknown, does the contractor legally have to show said invoice to insurance?

As in a contractor does work for an insurance company due to a claim you've entered?
You could get a copy of the work done but they would be entitled to remove their work rates etc due to company sensitive data reasons (wouldn't want competitors getting their hands on it)

I'd agree with this too, makes sense, for the reasons given.

Someone is telling me though, that it's within the law to be able to see such an invoice?

Surely the contract is between the insurer and the contractor. Therefore there is no duty to disclose the financial information to insured who is in effect a third party to that contract,

"Within the law" is different to "have to".

So are you the contractor here?
If so, tell them to take it up with the insurer.

Sounds like a contractor making money from an insurance claim over and above the actual cost of doing the job?

Isn't that the sole reason why he gets out of bed and goes to work in a morning?

He's a naughty boy and we are a very judgemental lot on here wink

It will put our insurance costs up.

We used to do masses of glazing work for insurance companies, it was explicit in the terms of business that we did not discuss prices with the insured client.

Our prices to the insurers companies were always pretty high, this was not driven by profiteering (whatever that is) but by the SLAs put in place by the insurers.

Unless your insurance policy has a claim limit i don't see how it's any of your business

If the insurer sent people round to make repairs who were directly employed by the insurer, would you expect to be able ask them how much they are paid?

I was given sight of an invoice, or at least the amount on a windscreen claim a few years ago as I had to pay the VAT.

It was a lot more than I expected.

What will you say when you go to change insurer and they ask the value of any claims in the last 5 years?

It's a secret?

It's down to your insurer to confirm the value of a claim, not the trades they subcontract.

In our case we used invoice "call outs" separately to replacement, so you might get a price for one element of the claim but not another.

Could always go the other route and do a subject access request to the insurer and have a look at the contents of the file (to make sure they are true and accurate account).

Has an insurer ever asked you that? Ever?

Serious question.

I've been asked that whenever I've changed buildings insurer. They wanted a list of all claims as well as a total cost for each claim.

On car insurance? Definitely. Not lately, though.
