I just found a small wad of AMEX travelers cheques which I didn't spend from a holiday 10+ years ago. I haven't used a travellers cheque since, so I'm a bit rusty with how you use them!

Each cheque is $50 USD and each was signed by me when I first got them.

Can I cash these in somewhere into £GBP? Do I have to cash the cheques as USD then convert them to GBP as a separate transaction?

Can anyone help with this, or are they so old that no one uses them anymore? Are they still valid?

Looking at their website they still offer them and say they don't expire. I expect you'll need a bank or Travelex type place to cash them and get pounds.

Quick update on this -
I found a local bank and travel agent that were listed in the Amex link above.

The travel agent was useless. They basically said that as we didn't buy the travelers cheques from them, then they couldn't cash them for me (??)

The bank was much more helpful. They made me counter sign each cheque and they have to send them away and process them like a normal cheque, but the money will get to my account in about 2 weeks. There is no fee for this but there is of course their current exchange rate for USD to GBP.

There was $600 dollars in total, so not a bad find down the back of the wardrobe! I'm not celebrating until the money hits my account though.
