Tonker's quote is right though, its all about probability of perception. Red is regarded as the primary colour, the colour which would spring to mind first amongst the most people. Hammer is seen as a primary tool, and so many people will pick it automatically. The people who combine the two will be amazed and will spread the word; the people who choose differently for one or both options will just dismiss the whole thing instantly.

Interestingly, I bet quite a few people DID think of red hammer for their very first guess, but then quickly changed it before reading on.

Tests have shown that, when a person is asked to name a random odd number between 1 and 100, the two most popular answers are 37 and 73. These figures are even the same when the question does NOT stipulate odd numbers only. Both these answers contain two odd numbers, and in both cases the sum of both seperate figures would be 10.

It's all about how the mind works. A good proportion of what Derran Brown does is based on statistical probability and manipulation. Those who learn the rules of such probability are normally the one's who can take everyone else for a ride!
