Private Plate question

Hi there.

2 questions if I may. I do afterall have to part with my beloved Chim. Not looking forward to an empty garage but it has to be done and I've no choice. When I assigned my plate to the car I did not retain the original 'standard' reg. Ideally my buyer will have their own (fingers crossed) BUT what is to stop them driving off with mine with just their assurance they're going to change it? Any advice would be great.

Also, I have a friend who is looking for a valuation for their plate, GIL3593 i.e. GILES 93. Anyone know where she can get a valuation, ideally for free?

`I've just sold my plate and the DVLA supplied me with a new age related plate as part of the process of putting it on retention.
If your certain about keeping it and want to be sure, get it put on retention yourself now and sell the car with the newly issued reg number.

DVLA will normally re-issue the number your car was issued with prior to you putting the palte on it. Or if you put it on from new, then they'll issue an age related plate.

Are you planning to keep your number to put on something else? If so, then transfer it now (£80) or put it on retention (£105 with free transfer to new vehicle).

You have to be the named party on both V5 forms as far as I know for them to transfer the number.

no need to hang onto the original plate. the dvla will do that for you.

just get yours (the one you want to keep) put onto retention and the dvla will more than likely issue the original back to you.

failing that a suitable age related plate will be issued.

For the plate valuation question, do Exchange and Mart still have a section for plates? If so look there for similar. As an 'off the cuff' I would say £200-250.

Get your plate onto retention as quick as you can. If you leave it until the buyer has your car its too late; its not your plate any more, its theirs!

As has been mentioned, there's no need to buy an age-related plate; the DVLA will assign you one when you put yours on retention. If its still available, they're likely to give you the original one from the car.
