Xbox One S or PS4 Slim?
Discussion
I know this usually causes a bit of a bun fight as it's a bit tribal, but...
Eldest (11) want's a console for Xmas, which I'll use too.
Last one I bought was a launch-ish PS3 back in 2006, it only died a few months ago.
Some facts:
We don't have a 4K TV and our HD TV is only 18 months old and I've no plans to change it.
All of our PS3 games got binned in a house move, I don't think they'd work in a PS4 anyway.
We do have a gaming PC, which we current use a cheap, wired Xbox clone controller for, so a nice new wireless one we could use with the PC would be nice.
Erm and that's it.

Two things to consider IMO...What has the better exclusive games (to you/your sons taste)? Or more importantly, try and find out which console his friends all have...he'll feel left out if they're all on PS4 together and he has an Xbox etc. as they won't be able to play games together.

It is this last part. What do most of his friends have? Yep...what do his mates use. I have been a PS fan since they began, so got a PS4 a year ago ....under the pretence it was for my then 12 year old ;-)
I was lucky, most of his mates use PS4 & not XB ! I refused to get PS+ initially as I was concerned about the online "world" but now he's 13 I have opened that up and had some conversations about appropriate etc.
The one thing I have found disappointing with PS4 is the number of games we can play together via split screen......everything appears to be geared up to sitting on your own and playing friends in a different place. Notable exception is Rocket League, which he also plays against his mates online.
I like the control the PS4 has with regards to main and sub accounts. Means I can limit his playing in terms of age appropriate games.

Thanks all, it seems obvious in hindsight.
Most of his school friends and his Uncle who likes games have the Xbox so it seems Sony's undisputed 20 year reign in my house is coming to an end.
Now just the tricky business of explaining to his Gran that the game I ask her to get, and went so far as to send a link to a supplier, is actually ‘wrong’.
