I have a 911SC with an intermitent gearbox problem. Roughly 50% of the time I can not engage first gear at all, the rest of the time it is OK (albeit a bit notchy). The car has done 140K miles and always regularly serviced by an independant Porsche specialist.

Do any of you guys have any ideas what it can be? I'm really hoping you are going to say "ah yes all you need to do is adjust xyz and then you will be sorted" and not "oh yes I had that problem and it required a gearbox rebuild costing £3K".

Many thanks.

When you can't get it into first, have you tried slipping it into second and then back up to first?
This may help in the short term, but i think you may have answered your own question on the rebuild (sorry).

You need a fairly stock 915 rebuild:

12 hour labour to remove, strip, clean, inspect, repair/replace, rebuild, refit

plus a selection of the following:
5 x syncro rings
2 x selector sleeves
5 x dog rings
i/o shaft nuts
gasket set
engine/gearbox oil (& filter)

Budget for around £1200-1500 + VAT if you rebuild all the gears to new.
