Oh shit I'm getting fat!
Discussion
..Had to have my pic taken at work today - put on my best suit that I hadn't worn for a good couple of months... couldn't do up the trousers!
aarghhhh!
I've not been indulging massively - a few tins after work every other night or so - the lunch out every week or so -
I guess its probably just not exercising
used to cycle a ten mile round trip to work - can't do that anymore 'coz I've moved.
Haven't been to the gym in a long time - kinda scared to go now....
Not tried the atkins malarky - but think I could probably do Steak & Cheese - just not sure about the no bread rule...
HELP!
any dieting advice gladly recieved!
(no smart arses saying 'eat less' please!!)

Sorry to be a smart arse but if you burn more calories than you eat, you'll lose weight.
Fad diets don't work as you're always restricted and want what you can't have.
What I did was to eat less, but what I wanted. Most days it was cereal bar for breakfast, low calorie sarnie for lunch, low calorie dinner (tomatoes on toast, low calorie microwave meal, salad etc.) Then every now and again, I had what I wanted (beers, pizza, curry). Becuase I knew I could have anything when I wanted, I didn't crave anything. One pizza every 2 weeks won't kill a diet.
Lost 3 stone. Coming back though, thanks to bird moving in and sitting on arse and scoffing all the time.

Ah, a fellow fatster! I've gradually put on a bit more beef over winter too. However I have no intention of keeping it for summer so I bought a keep-fit device: an ipod. I nip out at lunchtime for a stroll, switch the box on and instantly double my pace. I'm also eating and drinking less. Had a cracking 10-mile yomp on sunday morning too, which got things moving.
I'm no expert, but I reckon if I exercise more and eat less, I'll be back in trim in no time

just cut out the pies...i'm serious
I used to get a pie or two at the bakery across the road from my orifice daily, recently stopped (the bakery girl started stalking me
and telling my colleagues I was seeing her
) and in 3 weeks have turned in to skeletor! lost about a stone which is handy for beach bird pulling sans shirt

I'm having the same problem. My weight has always gone up and down but I could lose weight at will in the past.
Been putting on weight lately so ok I cut out all the choclate and crisps. No more sugar in tea and smaller portions. I also stopped all takeaways. Now that would usualy be enough to lose the weight quite quickely but it seems my metaboism has slowed down cos its not bugding
Going to have to get off my ass and go to a gym.

Find a sport you enjoy doing. Do more of it. Stop snacking in between meals. Walk everywhere.
And don't listen to anyone who tells you to 'just go to the gym'. OK, so if they work for you that's fine, but I personally hate them - they don't do anything for me at all, I used to come out fatter and heavier than when I went in, you lose very little weight despite hours of effort attatched to a smoothed-off torture machine, and there's no fresh air, which is vital for aerobic (ie cal-burning) respiration.
Can't stand the 'gym culture' either - there seems to be an element of showing off with it - how long you can exercise for, how hard you exercise, how much you pay, where you go - but isn't there something rather sad about running on a treadmill looking at a mirror and an electronic readout, when you could be running up a hill, looking at the view? Same goes for exercise bikes, cross trainers, rowing machines and the rest of them.
And is it just me or is there something a bit sad and obssessive about these men who spend hour after hour building their biceps on bench-presses? Do they realise they just make the gym look like a gay porn green room? And I'm well informed that women don't find Arnie-a-likes that attractive either.

Forget carbs, calories and all that bollox. Just drop the fat content of what you eat and the weight will fall off
It's not exactly rocket science. Eat a high fat diet and you have to get rid of the fat.
I aim for an "ideal" 10% on most stuff and the weight is falling off. No idea how many calories I'm getting at all. If you drop the carbs or calories, you'll run out of energy and won't be able to excercise properly.
IIRC, dieting is doomed to failure anyway. Our bodies are damn clever at adapting to lean times. If you significantly drop the calories our "lean times" behaviour kicks in and our bodies become more efficient at using the calories we have. As soon as you push the calories back up, even to levels lower than before you dieted the body will store them, hence you get fat.

I have lost a stone recently. I tend to use the gym about 4-5 times a week anyway, with cardio and weights. I literally stopped eating too much, stopped the odd scoobysnack (and doughnuts). I think the best way is to continue exercising, but not going too mad, and by eating a little healthier.
Weird, but I wasn't particularly on a diet, but decided I needed to lose a bit to keep up with the whippersnappers. The first I really knew about it was that my uniform trousers were a bit baggy, all very painless really.

Oh, that reminds me....
If you go to the gym, completely ignore the scales. If you start to excercise, your weight WILL go up as muscle is more dense than fat! All that matters is your waistline relative to your chest. As long as the ratio is going in the right direction you will end up how you want.
Scales are a very good way of becoming demotivated

V8, just don't get sucked into the perceived gym culture if that is what bothers you.
Gym's are good, I go 3-6 times a week depending on what im up to, just me against the machines, what other people do / wear / say means nothing. I'm there to get fitter and stronger simple as that.
I went to a gym about 3 times a week for a year and it did nothing. I'm not exactly fat as it is, but I wasn't getting much exercise. The only thing the gym lightened was my wallet.
It had very little to do with the other people there (that's something I've noticed since I've stopped going). My problem was the fact that it just didn't motivate me at all - it's monotonous and dull, the sports equivalent of book-keeping. However, once I started playing the sports the machines are based on, out in the open air, I found not only that I didn't have to pay for it, but I had a mental motivation for doing it too.
Get on an exercise bike and your motivation is getting a readout to say you've burnt x calories. Get on a mountain bike and your motivation, you'll find, is much the same as if you were in a rally car - get up that hill in the fastest time possible, pull some neat turns and enjoy the view. Now which one would you rather do? In retrospect, gyms start looking like centres for urbanites who can't bear to leave the city in search of a hill to ride up, or are too shy to find some people to play football with.
I find my 'gym substitute' keeps me in better shape than the gym used to, only now I can actually afford the well-deserved beer at the end of the week.
Only problem is my stomach. Ever since I was born, I've been completely unable to flatten it - I've always had a bit of an overhang, and it's all concentrated in a square in the middle. There is nothing I can do - in a gym or otherwise - to get rid of it. I've tried a regime of sit-ups and they don't do anything to it either. I am seriously considering liposuction if I could ever afford it. Seriously - the rest of my body is in pretty good shape.

A friend of mine who is a medical student. Also, it's GCSE biology these days, to know the difference between aerobic and anerobic exercise, and the importance of oxygen feed to the muscles in order to burn calories.
I went to the gym 3-5 times a week as a student and it kept the beer pounds off and gave me somthing to do.
When I started work, I worked out very heavily for 8 months or so and put loads of weight on!! The gym fees them went up by 1000% and I decided that I couldn't afford it. It was also slowign my martial arts down with excess muscle. Unfortunately all the excess muascle then turned to fat and I was a bit blobby.
I now walk 1-2 miles a day and drink mainly water through out the day and I still sit in front of a computer all day. I have to say that I have lost a lot of fat just through this. I cut out loads of soft drinks (they were free at the other work). i also now supplement this with sport once a week and I feel fine.
I would give the walking option a go, try cutting down on the beer and soft drinks.
