I'm sure there was a thread on this ages ago(can't find it), but I'm interested in how other people go about introductions in a professional manner when they are the boss in a new job / company. Scenario is senior leadership team member (Director), all direct reports are professional technical people in their own right, office based not shop floor.

How do you get to know your new team members ?
Do you have 1:1's with each of them after a general hello to the team ? Something else ?
What questions do you ask them in those first few days / weeks or meetings ? Structured or not ?
How do you get to understand what is right with current situation / work / team ? What about what needs addressing ?

I'm hoping to go through this in the not too distant future and know what I plan, but happy to hear what has (or hasn't !!) worked for others.

I would have a quick talk with each person, ask them how things are going, ask them to have a think and let you know what can be done better, what if anything they would like changed, the challenges they face etc and for them to let you know after that (and you have had a bit of time to digest and research) then schedule in a general group meeting so you can discuss the points raised or concerns anyone has from their individual meeting and that you aim to resolve/assist them to get the team working well etc.

you will have broken the ice and then a more formal meeting to move forward.

First 100 days:

Questions to ask your direct reports in your initial 1:1s and then the wider team in a centralised format:

“What do you want to keep?”
“What do you want to change?”
“What do you want me to do?”
“What are you afraid I’ll do?”
“What else do you want to ask me?”

Good luck!
