The flames coming out of the engine on startup!
You want flames...

This dusk take off by the Quantas Connie is more representative of a flame spitting Connie smile

And then there's the Eastern Airlines DC-7 running up before take-off biggrin

Probably a dumb question but I'll ask anyway. Why can I hear a jet engine sound before the main prop engines start up?
Is there a jet somewhere that I can't see?

Yes.
I thought it was some kind of APU but Aeropilot knows more than me.

I also thought it was a ground power unit for the startup.

I wondered too, when I couldn't spot anything nearby on the ground. It's an APU mounted within the tail, according to Google.

I don't it's the APU making that noise though in that vid, it's far too loud.

If you 'youtube' other Connie start-ups (this a/c plus the Aussie one, and the ex-mil EC-121 recently flown) there's not the very loud 'gas turbine' noise that you hear in that vid....so, I still think it's another jet nearby out of shot.

Did the civvie airliner Connie's or Super Connie's have the APU though, I had a feeling it was only the mil-spec versions like the EC-121...??

The Breitling one started off as a military one.
