I was looking in our local rag yesterday and came accross a full page advert in the jobs section from the Office of population and census, which have a huge office in Southport.

No problem, except that exactly half of it was in Welsh.

I can sort of understand roadsigns in Welsh in Wales (well actually I can;t understand them at all, as Welsh is gobblygook to me! ), but in a job advert for clerical staff in England?

I was in our local town planning office earlier this week, and there was a stand full of nice glossy brochures from the Office of Deputy Prime Minister.

They are top quality productions printed on very nice card, full of glossy photos of kids on roundabouts and swings, cyclist racing through parks etc.

There is a tiny bit of text to each large photo.

Why why why why?

What a complete and utter waste of money. Actually tells you nothing useful at all, but looks good.

Its the sort of production that a commercial organisation just couldn't afford to produce, much less justify.

Cross mode with stupid government off. (well actually, just paused until they piss me off again.)

Wasn't there a thread here a while back about Advice leaflets for asylums seekers in Wales which, due to some legislation, have to be produced in both English and Welsh?
How many asylum seekers in Wales have Welsh as their first language?

Our council (Trafford) have started a bin/bag recycling scheme.

Fine, except they still send out a useless 'whats happening in Trafford council' newspaper that nobody reads.

If the Government of this country spent as much on Hospitals and the old as they do looking after Assylum Seekers, Chavs and Pikeys things would be much better here

Reminds me of the Blackadder sketch where Edmund says to Baldrick "and dont ever ask for directions in Wales, you'll get covered in a pint of phlem"

I am Welsh and live in Wales and I definitely find the language policy very descriminatory against the anglophone majority, in particular Gwynedd County council only publish job vacancies in welsh nowadays, a few years ago I was studying at Aberystwyth for a PGCE in science, some folks were doing Science through the medium of Welsh! absolutely hysterical as the language does not have a scientific vocabulary but oh my werent those guys fawned over, where does patriotism end and racism begin?

A good question. I am reminded of S4C's adverts for 6 nations matches a while ago that were a bit too close to call.

Nothing wrong with having adverts in Welsh. Actually if anything it's good.

There are three indigenous languages in the UK, English, Welsh and Gaelic.

I'm sick and tired of councils up and down the country putting up posters, signs and notices in non-UK languages to be Politically correct. That's fundamentally wrong. This goes in the totally opposite direction, and though I could never benefit, I just hope they continue putting the ads out in Welsh.

And for the record they should only allow voting in English, Welsh and Gaelic too.
