AMG GT R posts blistering Nurburgring lap time

Sport Auto have published a video today of the AMG GT R lapping the Nurburgring in a scarcely believable 7:10.96! That slots the car firmly into the top10 fastest production times knocking the Gumpert Apollo Speed into 8th place according to nurburgringlaptimes.com.

That's mighty impressive, nothing within the same price bracket or usability gets close; for prospective the Ferrari 488 laps the ring in a 7:21.63.

Not sure about double the price (I thought the Nismo was quite expensive) and not sure the Nismo is that fast in the hands of Sport Auto. This time is faster than the time they set with the 918.

EDIT: Just checked the Nismo costs 20k more than the GT R (185k vs 165k) as far as I can tell.

AMG = ~£143k.

So, the Nismo is ~£18k cheaper and 2 seconds faster. Both great cars.

I think you need to compare apples with apples. Not manufacturers claimed times with independently tested times

No independent test that I know of has ever gotten close to Nissan's ring claims - e.g. the 2011 GTR was lapped by AMS in 7m34 at a time when Nissan was claiming 7m20.

7min10 is an astonishing time by the Merc - like the sls at the ring, it looks incredibly stable at speed.

Your update is still wrong.

The GTR lap time was set in the Nismo model with optional N attack package, containing lots of carbon parts, ohlins dampers and high downforce kit. IIRC the price was at least £170k, possibly more.

That's very impressive. It's a fantastic time but doesn't look rushed or untidy in any way. Am I also right in thinking this is a full traditional auto gearbox rather than a paddle-shift manual. Gear changes look seamless, certainly not the bang..bang.. bang changes you would expect for somebody going that quick.

I mean, I appreciate that its a fairly good benchmark for these cars. But unless they are all driven by the same driver it kid of takes away from if the GTR is ACTUALLY faster or slower.

The driver is a huge variable!

You then have weather / tyres etc

This drive was by Christian Gebhardt for Sport Auto, he does all their drives so it's the same driver in every car, that's why it's relevant he got it around quicker than he could in the 918 Spyder.

I appreciate that. My comment was more aimed at the GTR time which was set by Michael Krumm. The other top 10 postings are from a variety of different drivers. I am sure we can agree that it is a somewhat massive variable between cars.

Christian only recently took on the Supertest driving duties. The vast majority of the recorded Sport Auto laps, including that of the 918, were driven by Horst von Saurma.

Correct. Would be great if they can put him into the 918, Nismo GT-R and Aventador SV for comparison!

My mates skateboard with a Hayabusa lump strapped to it is 5 seconds faster again and cost 38 pence.
