Hello all both myself an my wife find ourselves working for employers who do not pay sick pay apart from obviously SSP. She works for a charity and I am just about to accept a position with a family business. The thing is we both will be well paid and enjoy the roles (or in my case the prospect of the role) so that got me thinking surely there must be a way of topping up with an insurance. Neither of us are sickly people when I had sick pay with my previous employer I never used it hardly. But what if we were injured or fell for a major illness?
I googled it and sure enough lots of high sponsored sites came back , so what I was looking for is a recommendation from someone that has used a service like this. It would be good if it were a mutual type business or association and if it included some private medical cover to speed up any treatment that would be good too.
We would also need something that would look kindly on my wife's situation she sustained a back injury after an attack at work at her previous employer, which was initially completely debilitating for her, but has responded to treatment with a steroid injection and continual pain killers. She Works as a head in special needs and autistic children unit, previously she was in a much more extreme and violent setting with teens and the injury was sustained while she was successfully preventing a teen from self harm.
Obviously we would like some cover for her but worry about her entire back as being viewed as a pre-existing condition?
So can anyone help?

When I first graduted, I had income protection insurance with Medical Sickness Society (a specialist one for doctors) but changed later on. My current one is with Zurich and my wife's is with Friends Provident. There are lots of variables to take into account and risks are also occupation dependent. You can protect against general inability to do any work at all, or not being able to perform a specific job type even if you could do other work (more expensive).

We went through the options with an IFA which is what I would suggest for you as well.
