I don't know how to make the car quieter but it didn't take me long to get used to its unique sound so maybe give it a few weeks for you to get used to it.
Its actually quiet on the move, its just startup and accelerating from slow speeds is a bit too diesely for a 2016 car.The only complaint, otherwise a great car.

As said, once underway it's not so noticeable.
I can't see there is anything you can do TBH.

That's one of the big complaints about that model/engine. I'll admit, it some what detracts from the 'quality feel' of the product.

I think the OM651 sounds good on acceleration. A nice, deep growl. It sounds rattly on start-up, but so do many petrols these days.As said, once underway it's not so noticeable.

Have you tried a different brand of fuel ?
Probably have this completely wrong but as I understand it modern diesels tend to be less clattery because of the way the fuel is injected. Injecting it all at one go results in the characteristic Diesel clatter. The all in one go method has operational benefits and tends to be used in commercial applications. Where a little more refinement is required in a passenger car the fuel can be injected in a number of bursts reducing the clatter but also reducing some performance values. To accommodate the extended injection time the fuel needs to be of an appropriate quality. Another consideration is winter Diesel is of a different standard to the summer offering it could add a bit to the clatter.
Having said that, I tried both a 220 and 250, decided I couldn’t live with the gruff 4 cylinder so went for the V6.

Upgrade to the 350d
Sorry, but ultimately it is a 4 cylinder diesel, don't think you can do anything about that other then perhaps a remote start and let it warm up a bit first before you go near it.
Can you on the W205. The OM642 is a delightful engine but even when cold its a bit gargly but once warm its so quiet and so very fast for something so economical.

Hi All,
In the Merc camp for the next year and a bit (traffic car), its a C250d AMG Line saloon.
Generally very happy with it, but it is very noisy.
Any suggestions on quietening it down if at all possible?
Probably doesn't help that its winter, not yet run in and my first diesel.
Cheers
4 pot diesels all make a racket, but the "250" mercedes engine is especially bad.In the Merc camp for the next year and a bit (traffic car), its a C250d AMG Line saloon.

Sounds just as bad when cold. Warm, the 250 sounds better.
It isn't just sound but the relative lack of it in the six clyinder compared to the 4. It's also much more refined in terms of vibrations but not as good as the best sixes. Fuel economy on the BMW 6 cylinder diesels about the same as the 4 pots too.

6 cylinder diesels sound so much better, smoother and quieter.

Yep. Economy wise there is less than 5% in it. Particularly on long sweeping routes. I routinely get around 46-50mpg from my E350cdi running from Helensburgh to Glencoe. Fuel economy on the BMW 6 cylinder diesels about the same as the 4 pots too.

It was good though because I really dislike it I could be sensible and get one and had to go for the 43 version instead. Now they do do the 350d which have made it a lot more difficult to choose as it is night and day compared to the 250d. And my experience was in the much heavier GL class.
Nope to me Mercedes doesn't have great 4 cylinder diesels at all. But I do realise they sell by the bucket load so I'm sure there are lots of people who like them.
Totally agree with you OP, I have tried many a time to go for a test drive and like a C220/E220-C250 Derv models and I just cant get over how bloody noisey they are.
I really dont understand how people put up with it. BMW versions are miles ahead in this regards.
The 3 litre versions are near as can be briliant much much more refined!
Not sure how people can put up with a having such a car and "putting up" with the noise or "getting used" to it.
Its like have a lovey wife but her walking around making pig noises and "putting up" with it.
Strange!

Agree. Even my 6 clyinder diesel annoys me refinement wise. Despite the cost benefits of diesel fuelled cars I suspect my next one will be petrol. And I drive 25k miles/yr mainly out of town on Mway and major routes-the reserve of the diesel car. I really dont understand how people put up with it. BMW versions are miles ahead in this regards.

I've bought my first Merc (2015 C300 Hybrid) few months back too. It's awesome for my long commute but one thing I do notice is the rattly sounding engine. Mine's not too bad as the leccy motor cuts in sometimes but for other times I just turn up the volume on the amazing sounding Burmeister
I've tried premium diesels and also Redex but doesn't really make any difference. Sounds decent on acceleration and on general pretty smooth.
