So I was listening to the news on the radio this morning. There was some news about kids between 11 and 14 are ringing children support or whatever that they are not happy with their gender and they want to start the "transgender" programme whatever that is. How many of you think this is normal? (I hope not many)

Regardless of what you or I think is 'normal', would you rather they didn't talk about it?

I'm sure social media and reality tv has made some very impressionable young people even more unhappy with their self image and worth. The whole unhappy with their gender isn't being helped by all these idiots on facebook etc coming out with statements about there being more than 2 genders and if you don't identify as a girl/boy you can make up what you are and ignore the body you were born in. I have zero issues with changing who you are, be that surgically or just by swapping clothes, there needs to be an understanding that the body you were born in is still the gender you are

Not at all, your bodies sex maybe male but your gender can be female, different things. If it doesn't effect you or someone you know is very easy to miss the difference.

Which begs the question - why wouldn't they just make it a text entry box so you could make up your own? biggrin

The only issue I have with the original post is that there's a very fine line between allowing children to explore gender and sexual identity without shame or embarrassment (which is a very good thing) and taking play behaviour a bit too seriously.

That said, a 14 year old child will have a pretty decent sense of self - if they do have some kind of dysphoria about their body then it's certainly worth some counselling to understand the situation, even if it never leads to medical treatment.

I don't see the problem at that age, surely puberty is when you first 'learn' these things about yourself, or however you would describe it.

Our grandson of three and half years suddenly announced, as he played with his toys, 'I don't like girls toys' !! Thank goodness for that I thought. Meanwhile girls and boys can learn to play any musical instrument without fear of offence to others.

Yet so many, including the post above yours would tell you that a child of three has no concept of gender.

I think at that age they're probably trying to discover who they are and this seems to be one trendy way of doing it.

Btw how would a guy know at 11 that he likes the sausage before even (presumably) trying the pie? biggrin

That explains most of the young lads I saw in nottingham last week shopping, I'd say 80% looked like they were wearing women's clothes wink the world was a lot simpler when you were straight or gay, none of this I was born a man but identify as a unicorn female

Was this the NSPCC / Childline calls story?

I think we need to remember that there is a burgeoning industry around these issues. Those people won't be above some promotional work.

Are you straight? Have you tried being gay for a bit just to see if you liked it?
