The law on air guns is changing in Scotland on the 31st and they now need to have a licence or handed in to the police. Don't really want to spend £70 on a licence and have the hassle of renewing so was thinking about handing it into the police this week. It's a bit sentimental as I have owned it for the last 30+ years. It's a BSA model which is quite a bit older than when I bought it. I thought I would just ask before handing it into the police next week.

Could I get it decommissioned and how much would it cost? My 12 year old son is sitting playing with it (the age I got it) we've had many good time shooting darts into the shed.

Think they were really common and every second kid had one. don't think it's remotely rare but thought I would put a few photos up.

sell it in England? Not worth loads, but more than you'd get from the Police. Then buy a bow to shoot with your son?

The licence thing in Scotland is a major clusterfk. The police have no resource to process the applications, 6 coppers working in their spare time, and thousands of applications to process.
They took my money in October and still no licence has come through with only 2 weeks to go to the "deadline". I expect an announcement in the next few days of a continuation of the status quo or thousands of people will become "criminals" at the turn of the year.

If getting ammunition won't be licenced as well, Id be inclined to keep it. Then when you've finally had enough of it. Use a hacksaw and chop it into 7-8 bits and take it down the dump. Chuck the wood in the wood part and the barrel in the metal.

Or grind off the numbers, make it really dirty, wrap it in a towel and take it to the Police saying you "found it when you were digging up the garden" biggrin

It's not like it's a machine pistol. And I'm guessing you wont be running around your town with it. So it's not exactly a problem about it "falling into the wrong hands"

Not especially rare, fairly poor condition, worth maybe £70 to a collector.

You might get a bit more if you are lucky...smile

Do you know anyone with a firearms licence? There are no limits to the number of guns held so anyone with a licence could hold this for you until you decide what to do with it in the longer term.

How have they taken your money ? The application form instructs the applicant not to send payment........

Bit harsh.

Is this licence a one off or yearly?
If it's one off i'd keep it.

You get a follow up letter telling you your application is being processed and a link to a payment site where you enter your reference and payment details. Money taken right away.

Not true. The airgun licence is in addition to a firearms licence. Only a registered firearms dealer can hold it for you or someone who already has been issued an airgun licence according to the blurb on the official site.

You've owned it for 30+ years, don't let it go.
Paying £70 is a small price to pay for sentimental value.

Where did you get that from? Think you'll find that's incorrect.

Looks like a Mk1 or Mk2 Meteor. Late 50s early 60`s

Worth more to you than others so get an Air gun cert and keep it.

Why SHOULD you give it up, just because the stupid Gov`t are pandering to the bleating stupid masses, thanks to the st stirring press rags.

No, it's correct. Anyone with a current firearms licence can also hold (and shoot) airguns on that licence until the current firearms licence expires (5 year licence). You are correct in that a new firearms licence issued after 1st January won't also cover airguns and the holder will then also have to apply for an airgun licence.

Thanks for all the responses. I have decided to take it down to my wifes parents in Lincoln over New Year. Hopefully by the time they peg it and clear their house out my son will be old enough to decide if he wants to keep it.

That's a BSA Cadet - and an early one (1946-47) if I'm reading the serial number prefix correctly.

Thanks Vincevega. Serial number is B61522 so 1946-47. Any idea if that makes it more valuable?

Just put in the loft or a cupboard and forget about it.For the last 30 years you have had it legally but now the law is changing you will fall foul.
It's another stupid law.

Instead of catching criminals they criminalise everybody who was previously law abiding.
